Running and governing on a GOP-lite agenda gaining Dem candidates any support. The party has had a rare opportunity to redefine itself to the public and gain support, yet they've stumbled badly.
Instead of defining themselves to the voting public and showing solid leadership in Congress, they've waffled, whined and agreed with Bush at nearly every opportunity. They've fallen hook line and sinker for the old, failed DLC idea that you have to run like a Republican to win votes.
But guess what? The voting public doesn't like Republican policies anymore.
And what's the result? Dems are failing to pick up any support with voters for 2008. In fact, they're showing signs of losing support..
http://www.pollingreport.com/wh08gen.htmAccording to a NPR Survey conducted by Greenburg, Quinlan, etc. on which party's candidate you would vote for in the 2008 Presidential election...
Oct. 4, 2007 - 36% GOP 49% Democrat 3% other 13% unsure
April 26, 2007 - 40% GOP 51% Democrat 3% other 6% unsure
Dec 7, 2006 - 28% GOP 46% Democrat 4% other 23% unsure
What does this poll tell us? Among other things, it shows the GOP has actually regained support since after last November's election going from 28% to 36% favorable. As for Dems, the 23% of voters who were undecided in December began leaning towards Dems in April, but have since backed off.
Dems and GOP seem to be running nearly even for the Presidential race, with Dems losing momentum as more voters shift from supporting them to being undecided.
During that time, there was no impeachment talk, but voters did have a chance to see Congressional Dems continue to fund Bush's appropriations for Iraq. It didn't gain support from voters, it caused them to lose support.
Is this what we have to look forward to for 2008? Watching Dems lose another election that they should have had in the bag, all because they didn't know how to stand up and support what voters want?
