Texan who joined Army at 41 is living her longtime dream to fight terra-ists

Grandma's gone off to war, and a fight that was black and white now has shades of gray.

Margie Black, one of the Army's oldest recruits at age 41 when she traded her Houston-area home for boot camp just over a year ago, is off to Iraq for a 15-month tour. She'll be at Tallil Air Base south of Baghdad, organizing equipment convoys but missing out on combat.

"Paperwork is OK," the one-time Texas prison guard said, "but you know I am used to action."

Fit, fearless and determined, Black quit her job at a lockup south of Houston to become a soldier and, with a little luck, fight terrorists. Her long-deferred dream to join the military was fulfilled only because the Army did the unthinkable — allow the ranks of middle-aged Americans to stand in formation with soldiers young enough to be their children.

3. Okay, that's one
Where are the rest of the doughy pantloads to sign up for this war they love to watch other people fight? Jonah? Sean? Bill? Rush? Or does this 41-year-old grandmother have more intestinal fortitude than all of you put together?

6. Good for her.
She put her money where her mouth is, which is more than we can say for most of the pro-war crowd.

If she comes back, maybe her eyes will have been opened a little more.
