Why is the Republican Party in relative good shape in Louisiana?
I mean this is the party whose president has ignored the state and let a major US city pretty much go down the drain. Yet on Saturday there is a good chance the GOP will take the Governorship without a run-off and Sen. Mary Landrieu is one of the few Dem incumbents in for a tough fight next year.

3. IGNORANCE
I live across the border in fellow Ignorant State Mississippi. Hey, jindal's a christian and according to him all his opponents are corrupt and/or incompetent. And katrina mostly damaged non white people in New Orleans so the religious fundamentalists in North Louisiana really don't care. Oh, and bobby jindal is also patriotic, just ask him.

I think Mary Landrieu will hold her own. She ain't the ideal democrat but she is an ass kicking campaigner. Just ask the neanderthal, ignorant slut conservative hag that ran against her last time. I'm not being nasty to the woman just accurately describing her.

6. Mary Landrieu is a very Conservative Democrat.
It is difficult to distingush the parties in NOLA.

The old Democratic Party has been abandoned. Once you abandon
Democratic Party Principles, it is very easy for GOP to move
in and takeover.

7. the poor people of LA tended to be democrats.. they have been devastated
and some "relocated" all over the US..The ones left behind are the ones who usually vote republican.. no surprise eher.. and Blanco did not really stand up for her state as staunchly as she could have/should have.

She was over a barrel, but she DID have the media attention of the world for long enough to speak her mind and shame Bushco into helping more.. She was timid, and they ran her over..

9. Oh I don't know...
perhaps because the State officials (overwhelmingly D's) are actually much more responsible for the Katrina debacle than the federal government?

elect weenies..get weenies :)

The FEDERAL corps of Engineers is a Louisiana entity..whodathunkit? If they had known that they would have earmarked more money to fix those levees correctly.. you better write & tell 'em:):hi:

16. They sure do!
Actually, there is currently a $215,000,000 federal project underway for "the incorporation of 54 miles of NON-FEDERAL LEVEES" into the 33 miles of existing federal levees in Plaquemines Parish alone. If congress had known they were all already federal levees they could have saved a lot of money. Better write & tell'em! :) :hi:

But I was talking more directly of the totally inadequate initial evacuation planning/execution/effort, the rampant looting that was all but encouraged by the withdrawal of local police forces - and confiscation of citizen firearms, and the general balls-up nature of everything attempted prior to federal involvement.

Having formerly been a civilian employee of the US ARMY Corp of Engineers, and having worked directly in the Emergency Management Branch which works closely with FEMA during natural disasters... I can tell you that FEMA/USACE do a great job of cleaning up afterwards, but initial response to a disaster like this reflects entirely upon local officials/agencies.

14. Oh, so your first post on DU is to criticize the Dems in the state and overlook
Bush's and "Brownies" responsibility. Interesting.

19. I'm not overlooking anything...
but anyone who doesn't realize that local officials were woefully unprepared, and performed pathetically - has their head in the sand.

15. That would be the federal government that's steering the $$$ to MS, right?
you know, the state next to La. that has former RNC chair Haley Barbour as its governor?

No, no federal responsibility at all. It's all Blanco's fault. :sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm:

11. Louisiania is made up mostly of conservative Republicans and conservative Democrats
And since the realignment after the Civil Rights Movement, most folks in the rural areas vote Republican. Urban areas like New Orleans tend to be more Democrat-leaning, but many in New Orleans left and never returned after Katrina.

21. This is the home of David Duke.
My former home, too. Lots of great liberals down there, esp in NO (at least there was in my time :( ) but hoooooboy lots and lots and lots of good old boys. People I knew down there were **still** complaining about integration, as if the 60's were yesterday.
