Oh fuck me.
Have you heard? After Rush Limbaugh referred to Iraq war veterans who have criticized the war as "phony soldiers," he got a letter of complaint signed by 41 Democratic senators. He decided to auction "this glittering jewel of colossal ignorance" for charity, and he pledged to match the price. When the eBay auction closed Friday, the winning bid for the letter was $2.1 million.

Wonder what charity he donated to. Any one know?

Edited on Sat Oct-20-07 12:41 AM by JohnnyRingo
I recall that one of his favorite "charities" is his own "Adopt A Soldier" program.

You may remember that that's where Limbaugh gets $50 from a "donor", and he "gives" a soldier a year of his own premium service, including web streaming and "exclusive content".

I wonder how this newest scam works.
There's no such thing as a compassionate conservative, and someone's pocketing a lot of that $2.1.

Or he wouldn't bother.

On edit, here's where the money's going:

26. Good Guess, his net worth is estimated at $33 mil.
So 2.1 million is bit over 6%. That's not chump change. Imagine you have some home equity and a 401k for a total of about 200k in assets, the equivalent proportion of your wealth would be a check for $12 grand. That would put a dent in your X-mas fund.

RUSH LIMBAUGH'S AUCTION OF ORIGINAL "HARRY REID SMEAR" LETTER GOES FOR $2,100,100: A RECORD-BREAKER ON EBAY FOR CHARITY AUCTION

-- Mr. Limbaugh Matches Philanthropist Betty Casey's Winning Bid: $4,200,200 Goes to The Marine Corps – Law Enforcement Foundation --

LOS ANGELES, October 19, 2007 – Last week, Rush Limbaugh announced the eBay auction of Senator Harry Reid's letter that was signed by 41 Democrat Senators and sent to Clear Channel CEO Mark Mays. The auction closed today with a record-breaking winning bid of $2,100,100 for charity through eBay Giving Works. Previously, the most expensive item sold through eBay Giving Works was the celebrity-signed Harley-Davidson from Jay Leno in 2005, which sold for $800,100. All proceeds, including Mr. Limbaugh's matched donation, totaling $4,200,200, goes to the Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation, a registered charity that provides financial assistance to the children of fallen Marines and federal law enforcement officers. Mr. Limbaugh serves on the Board of this organization and has been active on its behalf since its inception.

Mr. Limbaugh stated on his nationally syndicated radio show today, "Our winning bidder, subject to the receipt of funds, is a wonderful woman named Betty Casey. As trustee of The Eugene B. Casey Foundation, she gives significant sums to hospitals, hospices, colleges and private schools. These include The Eugene B. Casey Diabetes Education Center, The Eugene B. Casey Swim Center, The Eugene B. Casey Academic Center and The Casey Home Hospice. She has also donated tens of millions from the foundation and her personal funds to the Washington Opera."

He continued to share that, "Betty has been a listener to my program since its inception, and we can't thank her enough for her support. We'd also like to thank eBay Giving Works for allowing us to break their website in the closing moments of the auction, and Auction Cause, who was our consultant in prequalifying bidders and developing the auction."

"The Eugene B. Casey Foundation believes freedom of speech is a basic right of every citizen of this country. Their purchase of the smear letter was to demonstrate their belief in this right, and to support Rush Limbaugh, his views and his continued education of us," said a foundation spokesperson.

we hear so much about how people need to work hard to 'make-good' in america.

I couldn't have amassed 2.1 million dollars if i'd saved every penny i earned for every day of my entire life.

A fool and his money may be soon parted- but somehow i'm sure for that fool, theres plenty more where that 2.1 mil came from.

But we can't insure children or help our citizens heat their homes???

No charity affiliated with members of the military is worth spit if it takes money from a drug addicted draft dodger who calls members of the US military "phony soldiers".

The charity is a disgrace to Marines and the military.

59. Personally, I don't give a fuck WHO the money comes from.
4.2 million dollars (assuming he comes across with his share) donated to the welfare of the children of Marines who have died on duty isn't a gift-horse whose mouth I'd need to look into.

A disgrace? So you speak for fallen Marines? Their families? Jim Kallstrom makes the Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation a charity not worth contributing to?

As a former Sailor, I consider myself the closest relation to Marines, as they come under the purview of the Department of the Navy. I don't mind saying that as a Sailor, I was forced MANY times to rely on the largess of Navy Relief. Sure, I had to pay it back after buying formula for my daughter, but if not for their CHARITY, she'd have had to do without. And given the immediate necessity for charity in any respect, I wouldn't have bothered to look at whose name was at the bottom of the check. I'd have taken money from reagan, nixon, bush 1, OR bush 2 if it helped feed my child, put clothes on her back, or helped with her future.

Charity is a gift horse whose mouth should never be looked into. I don't give a fuck who gives a fuck, as long as their dollars flow into avenues that help those less advantaged.

Looking at charity with a political eye gives a person a jaundiced view. Why in the world would you care whose money helped those less fortunate than you, as long as they got help from SOMEWHERE?

BTW, I don't listen to limpdick, or watch faux news, and I'm flabbergasted that people who call themselves "progressive" would waste bandwidth talking about what they heard or saw on their websites/fake news shows. But it happens every single day here.

58. Just a publicity stunt
Him selling the complaint was just a chance to rally his minions in a desperate attempt to redirect the media attention from the usual "soldier bashing, drug abusing, hypocritical, neocon cheerleader" to "the caring, war supporting, soldier lover". As long as people stay on top of monitoring his show the attention will go back to where it belongs. THE TRUTH.

Why people actually consider him a "great american" is beyond me. This fat, pill popping bush cheerleader has proven on several occasions that he has no compassion. (mimicking of Michael J Fox, calling wounded soldier a "suicide bomber", mimicking of Graeme Frost, referring to soldiers who disagree with the war "phony soldiers", constant smears of Hillary Clinton, MMFA, and MoveOn.org) - these are just the examples that made the national media, who knows what is said by him that don't get caught. This is something we as DEMOCRATS and AMERICANS should stay on top of.
