A tough week for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi
A tough week for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi

By Renee Schoof

WASHINGTON _ House Speaker Nancy Pelosi found herself in a tight spot last week over her support for a resolution condemning the Ottoman Turks' slaughter of Armenians more than 90 years ago.

Pelosi didn't take President Bush's advice that the resolution would alienate Turkey, a NATO ally that plays a key support role in the war in Iraq. Some 70 percent of the U.S. military air cargo entering Iraq goes through Turkey, as do an estimated 3,000 trucks each day.

Turkey, one of America's closest Muslim allies, responded to the resolution by recalling its ambassador to the United States _ a stern diplomatic signal _ and threatening to chill cooperation with America in the region.

The result: Many House members found Bush's argument persuasive and withdrew their support for the resolution. It started with 226 co-sponsors and a solid majority, but so many dropped off that it's now unlikely that Pelosi will even bring it up for a vote.

The drama was an unusual public slip-up for the nation's first woman speaker, and it's raised questions about her judgment and priorities. Still, expert Congress watchers say it doesn't outweigh her overall success in holding House Democrats together and getting things done. But the incident sheds light on how House Democrats operate and the difficulties that lie ahead for them.

3. Of all the things that happened this week involving congress, this is the one thing I really don't
care about. The only thing I really don't care about. The congress is legalizing illegal spying, wake up america! and nukes are mistakenly flown around the country. and watada is going to be tried twice! And the entire senate and congress gave in to Bush about blanket warrants, pretty much guaranteeing their own power demise in 2008.

5. She's got only herself to blame.
From DAY ONE, she should have set out to get the necessary bills done and on *²'s desk, so he could not rant about how the congress has not gotten the bills passed.

We complained when the R's did this..

Concentrating on the things they COULD get done would have been a better tack, than to flop around trying to get impossible things passed.

The R's stick together , even if it's only to embarrass the D's (That's their favorite thing to do)..

She should have put bills forward to vote on.. taken NO August "vacation", and called daily press briefings to call out the obstructionist R's..

6. I hope Nancy is having a rougher time than she is making us have.
Nancy is suffering from bad karma. The day she starts putting her party first again is the day her good fortune will return.

OTOH, she can keep generating bad karma and eventually she'll become a repugnican.
