2 GOP Lawmakers Allege Democrats Have Ties to Terrorism

By Tim Craig
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, October 21, 2007; Page C06

RICHMOND -- Two Republican state legislators are accusing Gov. Timothy M. Kaine and other Democrats of embracing radical Islamic organizations that support terrorism, an allegation that has outraged the governor and Muslim leaders, who say the GOP is resorting to fear-mongering to win votes.

As Republicans work to retain their majorities in the General Assembly, the two delegates from the Shenandoah Valley say they are conducting an investigation into Democrats' ties to the Muslim American Society and Dar Al Hijrah Islamic Center, both in Falls Church.

Dels. C. Todd Gilbert (Shenandoah) and C.L. "Clay" Athey Jr. (Warren) allege that the society and mosque have links to terrorism, even though federal officials have found no such connection.

The delegates have been trying to connect Kaine and other Democrats to prominent Muslim leaders affiliated with the organizations. On Friday, Gilbert and Athey released a photograph of Kaine speaking at a Muslim American Society dinner this spring.

"It is clear to me that the leadership of the Virginia Democratic Party has compromised the best interests of the citizens of Virginia by cozying up to organizations and individuals that have radical agendas," Gilbert said in a statement Friday. "I am appalled by the utter lack of judgment that Democrats at the highest levels have shown in joining forces with a radical element of the Muslim faith for the sole purpose of filling the ballot box."

2. what the )(*$ is wrong with the Democratic leadership?
Why is something like this presented as news? THIS is the way the GOPukes do business, and to hell with the consequences. Stark "insults" the President and gets censured? These bozos accuse elected Democratic office holders as essentially being in bed with terrorists and who calls them to account?

Nobody.

WHen will the Democratic leadership stand up and do what is right, whether it be stopping funding the war or impeaching Bush/Cheney? They won't because they are part of the system, the Beltway Collective, and only reach the top levels if they prove to the DLC and others that they are willing to play the game the way the insiders do.

A party that can censure Stark for attacking the War and turn a blind eye to Lieberman enabling it is a party on the way out.

The Democratic Party has to realise that worse than being a "do-nothing" Congress, they are conducting a "do the wrong thing" Congress, and the voters will not forget that next year.

5. BS!!!
Using that line of reasoning....the republicans promote
prostitution (vitter the shitter), they support casual
restroom sex (Craig), they support all the crap that any
republican does in the name of 'conservative family values',
republicans support hypocrisy.
The republicans that stand behind dumbya support empire building,
war mongering, lying and TORTURE.

7. Call a political enemy a traitor
Who thinks it's not a very long trip from these scurrilous accusations to actual trials for treason? And yet Democrats feel compelled to apologize for telling the truth. Hit them back, and hit them back hard; it's all these bastards seem to understand. If Gilbert and Athey saw their political careers finished because of this slander, it might serve as an object lesson to the rest of the Virginia GOP, which, until it moves against nutjobs like this, must be deemed complicit in their baseless allegations.

9. Modern day McCarthyism
It is so easy to tag someone as a terrorist similarly to the way people were tagged Communist in the 50's
