White House Warmongering

Yesterday VP Cheney told a DC audience, “The Iranian regime needs to know that if it stays on its present course, the international community is prepared to impose serious consequences." This represents the latest White House salvo in a propaganda campaign laying the groundwork for military action against Iran, a campaign that dates back almost six years—to Bush’s 2002 State of the Union address in which he designated Iran as a founding member of the “axis of evil.” Since then, this drumbeat has waxed and waned as other concerns—primarily the disastrous invasion and occupation of Iraq—have often commanded center stage. Now, with the Bush administration approaching its final year in office, a renewed push and a shorter fuse are increasingly evident.
