Talk Host Gallagher: ‘Round Up’ Olbermann, Damon, And ‘Put Them In A Detention Camp’
Think Progress: Talk Host Gallagher: ‘Round Up’ Olbermann, Damon, And ‘Put Them In A Detention Camp’

Yesterday on Fox News, talk radio host Mike Gallagher said the U.S. government should “round up” actor Matt Damon, “The View” host Joy Behar, and MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann and “put them in a detention camp until this war is over because they’re a bunch of traitors.”

Gallagher was upset over Behar’s comment that Time magazine should have chosen a controversial “Hitler-type” like Donald Rumsfeld as its Person of the Year. Gallagher said Damon should also be incarcerated because he “attacked George Bush and Dick Cheney”; he didn’t explain why he wanted to imprison Olbermann. (Video at link below.)

Earlier this year, Gallagher was one of five conservative talk radio hosts invited to the White House to meet with President Bush.

Full transcript:

GALLAGHER: You know, it’s a little bit ridiculous that we continue to watch these TV stars and movie stars who smear our leaders. I just wonder, Rob, if you’ll think for a moment what our enemies think of seeing TV personalities compare the outgoing defense secretary to Adolph Hitler. I mean, you know, conservatives never get a pass. Strom Thurmond is wished a happy birthday by Trent Lott and the sky falls in on Trent Lott. But Joy Behar goes on national TV and compares a good man like Rumsfeld to the evilest man in the world and nobody, you know, there’s no repercussions for Joy Behar. I think we should round up all of these folks. Round up Joy Behar. Round up Matt Damon, who last night on MSNBC attacked George Bush and Dick Cheney. Round up Olbermann. Take the whole bunch of them and put them in a detention camp until this war is over because they’re a bunch of traitors.

(Talk show host Rob) THOMPSON: They’re not traitors, they’re Americans. And you know what the great thing about America is you get to say what you like and you don’t get thrown into detention camps.

GALLAGHER: No, you don’t.

THOMPSON: And that’s what the rest of the world sees. They see free Americans say what they like without having any fear of going to jail. So, if I wanted to compare someone to Hitler or anybody else, Pol Pot, whatever it might be, I have no fear of going to jail because that is what an America is.

GALLAGHER: There’s such a thing as treason, Rob.

THOMPSON: That’s not treason. That’s just political talk and satire and it might be funny at the best, at the least.

This guy is such a jerk. I hear about 10 minutes at the end of his program as I drive to work. A while back he went down to Farmer's Branch, TX, support the town in legislating anti-immigrant laws. Now the deli he broadcast has lost half its business and Mike is begging his listeners to send money so the deli can stay in business.

5. A Real American Hero, he is!
There is such a thing as treason - like exposing the identity of an active CIA agent, or intentionally giving weapons to our enemies which are then used to kill American soldiers, or intentionally subverting the goals & actions of those soldiers.

If he's looking for people to put in detention for treason, start with the White House staff.

7. There is such a thing as treason
and I might argue that Gallagher just committed it. A verbal attack on the President is legal under the Constitution. The President, after all, is not the USA, just the main public servant. The "don't blame me, I voted for the other guy" is a classic bumpersticker, and we do not, and should not, abandon our Constitution or principles in a time of war.

A verbal attack on the Constitution itself seems alot closer to treason. That is an attack on our very principles, and an insult, if not a threat, to every American. However, even that kind of speech is still protected by the first amendment. In other words, Mr. Gallagher, you have a right to say what you said, but what you said is deeply, disgustingly, and fundamentally UN-American.

Edited on Mon Oct-22-07 11:49 AM by DBoon
Advocating sending your political opponents into detention camps is not funny and has no place in a democratic society.

This kind of crap has to stop before it becomes reality.

Julius Steicher published a tabloid rag in Wiemar Germany that said similar things about Jews and other supposed traitors. After a bloody war and ghastly mass extermination, Steicher was hung as a war criminal. His rhetoric was recognized by the judges at Nuremberg as one of the enablers of the holocaust.

We have our Julius Streichers in the American media. I don't want to wait until the Hitler that follows their rhetoric gains power.

I want them off the air NOW.

15. Add Garrison Keillor to the list of potential detainees
What is really scary is that so many members of the public would agree with Gallagher.

This is a LTTE from yesterday's Minneapolis Star Tribune. The woman who wrote apparently thinks Bush rules by divine right.

http://www.startribune.com/letters/story/1496347.html

ENOUGH BUSH BASHING

Keillor loses a fan

Garrison Keillor was one of my favorite radio personalities. I was one of the biggest fans of "A Prairie Home Companion." I even forgave him for going to New York and leaving us behind. But I have suffered too long with his commentary belittling our president.

The last column I read was Sept 30, "Drink from the well of fresh ideas." He ends by saying "When you push an incompetent frat boy on the country, what you get is what has happened ... loyalty to the Occupant now is like marriage to a drunk."

I am really tired of the lack of respect for any person, let alone our president. People from my generation were brought up to respect the office as the persons in power were there because God permitted them to be. Keillor has joined the camp of those who find glee in degrading those to whom they feel superior. I'm sure it doesn't matter to him what an old lady thinks, but I am willing to bet there are a lot of others like me who decry the lack of gentility, outright bad manners and crassness expressed by those who hate Bush.

The left is trying to destroy the pillars of our great country," Gallagher says. After a foreword by Sean Hannity, regular listeners will expect-and enjoy-attacks on familiar targets: Bill Clinton, Michael Moore, the Dixie Chicks, animal-rights groups, Hollywood liberals, parents who won't spank their kids and immigrants who don't or can't learn clear English ("Heh-yo, Hoppy China, yoh ohrduh peez?").

It's absolutely dreadful. Is that the Oval Office? I know they put that kind of ugly, peach-colored sunburst carpet in the Oval Office, but maybe they've put them everywhere. It's GOD-AWFUL. If Bush had a hand in it, he should be ejected from the White House on grounds of bad taste alone. It looks like an RV.

52. Woo-hoo, Gallagher's made the big time!
I used to listen to this sad, pathetic fascist a few years ago before his show was cut from North Country (NY) radio.

He wasn't making the headlines, so he decided to kick it up a few notches. I remember when he held a "forum" about a muslim youth camp that was about to open up. He did a series of shows from the town and constantly attacked the muslim leaders for "trying to open a madrassa in America". He invited the local imam to his show but when the imam refused, Mike just insulted him even more.

Since then, he seems to be emulating Savage in his hatred of all things foreign, especially muslims.

His wife, a self-described liberal, never listens to his show.

By the way, his son DID once consider joining the Army, but backed out.
