Prediction: Guiliani will pick Huckabee as his VP running mate |
|
I predict that Huckabee will have a much stronger showing than expected in the primaries - not enough to win, but enough to make himself known. He might win a state or two - primarily in the South - but will still likely finish 3rd to Guiliani and Romney.
Why pick Huckabee as his running mate? His credentials among the whack-job religious right are solid. There are already many Christian conservatives openly talking about running a 3rd party candidate if Guiliani is nominated. This would effectively split the GOP vote, securing a Democratic win in '08. In order to prevent this, Guiliani needs someone who can appeal to the religious conservatives, and that person is Huckabee. Huckabee would also help Guiliani pick up votes in the South. I think Huckabee would accept a VP slot, which would put him in an excellent position to be the front-runner either in '12 or '16.

1. Tweety said that combo won't work because, together, their names would sound too ethnic |
|
and if either one runs, they would need a "wasp" (exact quote) sounding name on the other end of the ticket.

16. I don't know about ethnic, but he does have a point in it sounding terrible. |

Guliani Huckabee? It sounds like a shampoo or a weird character in a childrens book.

22. That's why I think it will be Duncan Hunter |
|
It also will (theoretically) bring California into play. Along with the re-emergence of that fight over CA's electoral votes - another thread said that's been revived.

4. If Giuliani is the nominee, he won't need to persuade the evangelicals |
|
with Hucksterbee--he will have already won them over, and they sure as shit aren't going to vote for Hillary or Obama. Rudy as the nominee will have overcome his biggest hurdles with the base, and he will be free to choose someone that will negate one of Hillary's strengths--someone who has military/foreign policy experience, perhaps, which is where he is weak. I wouldn't put it past him to choose his buddy McCain as VP, actually--McCain still polls very well against our people.

21. I disagree. Guiliani can win the nomination without most |
|
of the religious right- and if he wins, that's how he'll do it. The religious right will likely split in the primaries between Huckabee, Thompson, Romney and maybe Hunter. If Guiliani wants to get any or the religious right on board, he'll need someone like Huckabee. I think the OP is correct.

Huckabee would be someone who could rally the religious wackos to Rudy. Most of them don't trust him, but Huckabee, they trust.

9. They don't trust him that much. The founder of the Right To Life Committee endorsed Romney today. |
|
Again, if Rudy is the nominee, it means the wackos have either accepted him or aren't enough of a force to matter.

I'm shocked that anyone would believe Romney is out for anything other than himself. But I guess the sheeple will believe anything.

12. Yep. All the wailing and whining they're doing is their last gasp for |
|
relevancy. The fact that the Values Voters Summit participants had two weeks to vote, and could do it by mail, in person, or e-mail, and ONLY generated 5 or six thousand votes NATIONWIDE, tells you something about how much interest there is in the fundie wing of the GOP. Not much. Obama gets more people than that in his big-city appearances.

14. I predict he will choose Rick Perry of Texas |
|
He won't appeal to the evangelist. I gave more to nonprofits than he did a couple of years ago. He had a huge scandal/rumor about a homosexual relationship that was never proven nor addressed. He attended the Bilderberg (sp?) meeting this year which beats staying at a Holiday Inn Express. And I don't think Guilliani has a lick of sense.

15. He can't. Giuliani's ONLY hope is trying to appear more moderate than he really is. Picking a VP who |
|
believes in creationism and that the earth is only 6000 years old and who is insanely anti-choice and anti-gay-equal-rights spoils Giuliani's only hope.
Guiliani would pick a Southerner who can reach out to the theocrats but who comes off more as a businessman and less of a preacherman, someone like Haley Barbour or Rick Perry.

20. I don't think so--the low taxers and big business wings don't like Huckabee |
|
Rudy'll choose someone who doesn't piss off the money guys.
The Republican Party is full of candidates who can talk the talk on family values and immigration but who also know which side their bread is buttered on when it comes to economic issues. The Fundamentalists will for the most part fall in line.
My guess is that the demographic they're scared of losing is Republican women. I wouldn't be surprised to see him pick a woman if Hillary Clinton is the Democratic nominee.
