Poll question: Reproductive Rights - How important is the candidates position on this issue? |
|
To you. How central is it to what you are looking for in a candidate. Bryant Check it out --> http://politicalcomment.blogspot.com

1. It's central to me, because it's part of my central issue: privacy and autonomy over one's |

2. It is directly related to the government involving itself in people's personal lives |
|
Remember Terri Shivo?
Do you want the government telling you whether you can take birth control or not?
Do you want the government telling you an abortion is not permitted even if the life of the mother is at stake
It can be extrapolated to stopping embroyonic stem cell research, and even gay a lesbian restrictions

3. OK - but weigh that against foreign policy |
|
Where we are causing the deaths of thousands around the world (but mostly in Iraq) - which issue should have precedence.

6. Both. If we lose are freedoms at a Constitutional level, everything else is irrelevent |

The Supreme Court is probably the most important reason to vote Democratic in 2008
Without our first ammendment rights, we the people will be unable to stop any war

13. There's no reason we can't have both peace and autonomy over our own bodies. |
|
I don't see a need to weigh one against the other.

15. The US is also causing thousands of deaths with an archaic global family planning policy |
|
We refuse to give aid to any agency that even mentions abortion. We refuse to promote contraception and instead tell countries they need to push abstinence. A person's views on the issue of choice and comprehensive reproductive health care are huge. So called "pro-lifers" have caused untold death around the world.

there's no law that says we have to have sane foreign policy at the expense of reproductive freedom. And anyway, there isn't a viable Dem candidate running that would restrict choice.
And no, I would not compromise on this issue.

They might just mean not important compared to other issue - it's also worth noting that all of our candidates have largely the same position on this particular issue.

9. hypothetically or in reality? |
|
Hypothetically it's very important indeed - an almost definitive test in this day and age of whether a candidate wants to kowtow to the "religious" "right" or go with objectivity and reason.
In reality? Bugger all importance for this bunch because I can't see any daylight between any of them in how they would effectively sign/veto bills and nominate judges to protect the right. They may have different histories and ways of discussing the issue but from Kucinich to Richardson and everyone in between I think we can safely predict a pretty consistent slate of non-troglodytic judges and reasonable signing decisions in this area.

Those are two of my biggest deal-breakers.

12. That's a whole nother issue - but i'm curious |
|
What if a candidate, when asked about evolution said "Well I believe that God created us; I believe in a creating God. Now we don't know the methods God used to create us, but we honor God by trying to understand those methods as best as we can. Thus we need to be studying evolution, which seems, from a scientific standpoint, the most likely method of bring humanity into existence." Something like that. Is that enough of a finesse?

16. I think "theistic evolution" is a relatively reasonable position |
|
Worth noting that every one of the serious Presidential candidates on the Democratic side cop to being Christians. We're a long way from any real chance of electing an atheist or agnostic.
I'm opposed to giving power to young-Earth creationists who say that their religion's creation myth should be given equal status to evolution in public school curricula. At least three of the stated GOP candidates hold that position.

For me, it is "very important". In 99% of the case, I would not vote for a pro-life candidate

If they're a gun-grabber, I don't care if I agree with every single other position they take. They'll never get my vote.
