Officials Link 2 PB Brands To Salmonella
FDA: Certain Jars Should Be Avoided

POSTED: 7:45 pm PST February 14, 2007

ATLANTA -- A salmonella outbreak that has slowly grown to nearly 300 cases in 39 states since August has been linked to tainted peanut butter, federal health officials said Wednesday.

It is believed to be the first salmonella outbreak associated with peanut butter in U.S. history, said officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

About 20 percent of the 288 infected people have been hospitalized, but none has died, said Dr. Mike Lynch, a CDC epidemiologist.

About 85 percent of the infected people said they ate peanut butter, CDC officials said.

How salmonella got into peanut butter is still under investigation, Lynch said.

The Food and Drug Administration warned consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan or Great Value peanut butter because of the risk of contamination.

The affected jars have a product code on the lid that begins with the number "2111." The affected jars are made by ConAgra in a single facility in Sylvester, Ga., the FDA said.

3. How the hell did the get salmonella in peanutbutter?
It's a bacteria normally found in the digestive tract. Peanuts don't have one.

13. I just posted this below...
snip...
ConAgra is recalling all Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter beginning with product code 2111 that was already distributed and is destroying all affected products the company still has, the FDA said.

The company will cease production until the exact cause of contamination can be identified and eliminated. Meanwhile, ConAgra advised consumers to destroy any Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter beginning with product code 2111.

9. So what happens after you are sick?
I'm just curious about what happens when a person contracts salmonella from tainted
food--in this case, peanut butter.

Who pays for your hospital bills? Will Con Agra pay for the people who suffered,
as a result of salmonella in their food?

Companies should compensate victims of these illnesses.

Edited on Wed Feb-14-07 11:49 PM by TwoSparkles
Seriously?

I didn't know this. I believe what you are saying--and if this is
true, it is quite the injustice isn't it?

I mean, what incentive would corporations have to supply the public
with safe food, if they are not held accountable when they serve
poison to the public?

Who in the hell made this possible?

(My first love dumped me during finals week in college,
for a real trollop. He broke my heart. He's now a
VP at Con Agra. That figures!)

from the article...
Great Value peanut butter made by other manufacturers is not affected, the agency said.

So I guess it is made by more than one manufacturer.

26. Skippy. But...
REALLY choosy mothers go for the real stuff with the peanut oil floating on the top. Costs twice as much, but isn't loaded with sugar and hydrogenated soy oil fillers.

(I pour the oil off and use it for stir-fry and other stuff.)

31. ConAgra is also Banquet and Egg Beaters.
So there might be a possibility that chicken and eggs are processed in the same plant as the peanut butter.
