Russia test launches inter-continental missile

MOSCOW, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Russia on Monday test fired an inter-continental ballistic missile in a bid to extend service life of such weapons which was first produced in the 1970s, news agencies reported.

The RS-18 missile, which is known as SS-19 Stiletto in the West, blasted off from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and hit the target in Russia's far east, Itar-Tass and Interfax cited Russian Strategic Missile Troops spokesman Vadim Koval as saying.

The launch was aimed at "confirming stability of main performance characteristics" and other evaluations have indicated a possibility of extending its service life to 2031, the spokesman said.

Russia now has 160 such missiles and each of them was armed with six warheads, Itar-Tass said.
