Raisin Brain has not had very good luck with Attorney Generals and that doesn't look like its going to change any time soon. His first pick was John Ashcroft, the mega-Christian super conservative former Congressman defeated by a dead guy in his home state who draped naked statues, anointed himself with holy oil before meetings and wrote bad gospel music.

Next came Alberto Gonzales, Bush's inept former personal attorney. Gonzo advocated torture, tried to coerce a hospitalized Ashcroft to approve flaunting the FISA law, and claimed the worst case of amnesia over details of the firings of eight former Federal prosecutors. He may yet be indicted himself on that one.

It looked like the third time's the charm for Bush's AG pick as retired federal judge Michael Mukasey seemed to enjoy widespread bipartisan support in Congress. That is until he started actually talking to the Senate Judiciary Committee about the use of waterboarding to coerce information from detainees. Seems that Mukasey claims he doesn't know what waterboarding even is and certainly doesn't have a clear opinion of its use one way or the other. Wow, if that's true then he hardly seems qualified to execute important decisions in Bush's ongoing terror wars.

In an off-camera, behind-closed-doors chat with the White House press corps today, Bush explained Mukasey's refusal to answer direct questions about the heinous practice of waterboarding this way: "He doesn't know whether we use that technique or not. And it doesn't make any sense to tell an enemy what we're doing. And the techniques we use by highly trained professionals are within the law."

We'll discuss this and other errors in judgment by Man-or-Monkey on the program tonight.

One recently exposed inamorata was Norman Hsu, the mysterious businessman from Hong Kong who brought in $850,000 to Hillary Clinton's campaign before being unmasked as a fugitive. Her campaign dismissed Hsu as someone who'd slipped through the cracks of an otherwise unimpeachable system for vetting donors, and perhaps he was. The same cannot be said for the notorious financier Alan Quasha, whose involvement with Clinton is at least as substantial -- and still under wraps.

Political junkies will recall Quasha as the controversial figure who bailed out George W. Bush's failing oil company in 1986, folding Bush into his company, Harken Energy, thus setting him on the path to a lucrative and high-profile position as an owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team, and the presidency. The persistently unprofitable Harken -- many of whose board members, connected to powerful foreign interests and the intelligence community, nevertheless profited enormously -- faced intense scrutiny in the early 1990s and again during Bush's first term.

Now Quasha is back -- on the other side of the aisle. Operating below the radar, he entered Hillary Clinton's circle even before she declared her candidacy by quietly hiring Clinton confidant and longtime Democratic Party money man Terry McAuliffe at one of his companies. During the interregnum between McAuliffe's chairmanship of the Democratic Party and the time he officially joined Clinton's campaign, Quasha set McAuliffe up with a salary and opened a Washington office for him. <snip>
