3. Use your damned Wikipedia and don't be snarky. |
|
The man's name was Colonel Paul Tibbets, which would have taken you thirty seconds to look up before posting "Tidbitz or whatever his name was."
Also, you are judging the man by 2007 standards, not by 1945 standards. You can play the fool's game of hindsight history if you want, but at the time the atomic bomb was seen as the only reasonable way to end the war without getting hundreds of thousands of Americans - and Japanese, we DID think about their casualties too - killed. It was seen as a regrettable but unavoidable act at the time.
Also, although I can't find evidence of it, the result of the bombing was severe depression of some of the members of the Enola Gay crew. I recall this from an old TV documentary. If you think Tibbets or anybody was cheering on the deaths they brought on, you're not only offensive, you're as stupid as George Bush.

And our military was a lot more moral then than we have now largely because they were drafted to do a dirty job and brought with them there basic morality to the job. You only have to talk to some of the WW2 vets to see it. They seldom talk about it because they do not see themselves as heroes like we seem to want our military to be today. They were not proud at all of killing anyone even though the enemy in most cases deserved it. This is not your fathers war and not his values.

8. My Grandfather was a solider in that war and in his letters he says it was an atrocity |
|
He was living in 1945 and it didn't sand up to his standards. He was aghast that he had fought and bleed for a country that would do something like drop an atomic bomb.
60 years from now people are going to point to the polls back when the Iraq war had a 75% approval rating and people will say "You can't judge Bush by our standards." It will be just as much as a bullshit argument in 60 years as it is today.

18. I still maintain it's 20/200 hindsight. |

I've read extensively about World War II on the home front; it's the one period of history that really appeals to me. And it was the certain belief that hundreds of thousands of deaths would occur in a physical invasion of Japan.
Like it or not, call it ignorant if you wish, but the solid belief of America's leaders and its people was that the Japanese would fight tooth and nail if we tried to invade. If Doctor Who would lend us his TARDIS, you could go back to 1944 and try to argue with the Joint Chiefs about how the atomic bomb was not necessary. It would be entertaining to see the response you would get.
Comparing the Japanese, who conquered a huge hunk of Asia and who did attack Americans, and the Iraqis, who didn't truly attack us on September 11, is a disjointed argument anyway.

16. Know how Tibbits feels now, don't you? |
|
Except, as mentioned, he didn't deserve contempt for doing a difficult job that he - and nearly all of America - thought was the only way to end the war.
You, dear sir, need to think before you write. You need to save outrage for those situations that truly deserve it, not just to show off or prove your manhood. And you might have some compassion for people you have never seen and haven't enough education to comprehend. Guess who else posesses those qualities, won't you? All right, here's the answer. Bush.
I stand by what I said.

And it looks to me like you are the one resembling a bushitler here... wanting to compare Ph.d.'s and all. Oh and I'm neither a sir, nor outraged. Thank you very much. :toast:

Very repetitive action involved, but there is more to them than just folding them while you're folding them.
