http://www.terradaily.com/reports/Climate_controversy_heats_up_Australian_election_999.html And Al Gore has been very instrumental in changing the mindset of Australians apart from the history making drought that has caused massive losses of crops, water, land, livestock, and the lives of farmers too depressed to face it. John Howard has failed to lead on this crisis, and now with it looming over the lives of Australians it is now a primary topic in this election. Unfortunately, I think that is what is going to have to come to pass here before people on the whole see the urgency of it. Sure, there is a drought in the Southeast and fires in California, but those events do not seem to be driving the tone of debate to the next level. I surely thought after Hurricane Katrina that the dialogue would also turn to this urgency, but it appears that unless you are personally effected by it here it doesn't seem to register. However, should Howard lose this month that will hopefully put pressure on the U.S. as the only country to not have ratfied the Kyoto Protocol. That is imo definitely part of the strategy that will bring this country to doing just that along with the grassroots effort to educate the public about the urgency we now face.
