Bush urges swift confirmation of Mukasey
By Kevin Bogardus
November 03, 2007

President Bush Saturday urged the Senate to swiftly confirm Michael Mukasey, his choice to lead the Department of Justice, after it became clear this week that the nominee would likely receive enough support in a Senate Judiciary Committee vote Tuesday.

“This is the kind of leader America needs to head the Department of Justice at this important moment in our history,” said Bush, who has spent much time this week touting Mukasey and pressing the Senate on the confirmation.

While several committee Democrats had voiced doubts about Mukasey, the nomination appeared to head toward the panel’s approval Friday when Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) released statements saying they would support Mukasey. Getting through committee is seen as the largest hurdle remaining in the confirmation process.

Opposition had grown to Mukasey because of his refusal to explicitly state that waterboarding, an aggressive interrogation technique that simulates drowning, constitutes torture. Five committee Democrats, including chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), announced that they planned to vote against Mukasey.

In his weekly radio address, Bush said lawmakers could not expect Mukasey to comment on the secret interrogation program for terrorist suspects.

“Congressional leaders should not make Judge Mukasey's confirmation dependent on his willingness to make a public judgment about a classified program he has not been briefed on,” said the president.

4. What a proud moment in American democracy
and what a fine reflection on the state of human rights in America

It isn't every day the Senate gets the chance to confirm someone who will provide legal cover for the government's torture policy....well, it won't be the first time the Senate has done so...but it certainly isn't an everyday kind of thing.

8. Not soon enough
and never really, not without full exposure of their crimes and accountability that rises to the level of their crimes

Otherwise, they'll just come back in a few years...

and even if it's not the exact same people, it will be people who are just like them

10. Bush wants Mukasey's rapid confirmation so to thwart any and all investigations
...into the USA purge, bastardizing the *definition* of torture that covers his behind, burying any investigations into warantless spying, AND to head off the Neocon/AIPAC/Espionage trial from starting on January 14, 2008.

It's all to cover him from ANY prosecution. For anything. Forever.

And the Deciderer/WarPreznit/dicktator-tot says it's high time for his boy Mukasey to start signing off on it all.

So, how does this photo grab you? Some DU'er posted this today, and I blew a gasket.

I haven't been as angry as I am today for a very long time.
