Retired Marine guilty in torture murder

SANTA ANA - A retired Marine Corps sergeant faces a life term in prison without the possibility of parole after he was convicted Thursday of torturing and strangling his wife after he learned she was having an affair.

James Herbert Speights, 50, assembled torture and restraint devices, including chains, Mace and a stun gun, before he accosted his wife, Jeselinda Zill, on Nov. 20, 2004, in their Irvine home, Deputy District Attorney Matt Murphy told the jury.

He faces a sentence of life without parole because the jury found him guilty of the special circumstances of murder during the use of torture.

1. Is there an element here of: "If the feds can do it, so can I"?
I think there are elements of our population who latch on to this notion.
This guy could have simply divorced and moved on with his life...now look at the mess he's gotten himself into, much less the fact that he murdered someone.

3. Stay tune
There have been several stories of returning soldiers' murders and suicides.

In a different arena, I have asked repeatedly a question, what are we going to do with returning soldiers who have not been de-pressurized? Meaning, some soldiers are leaving combat zones and inserted into society without any support.

It appears that many believes that there is some magical "off" switch built into returning soldiers that allows them to just integrate back into "normal" society. I do not know how true it may be, but, many years ago, I vaguely recall reading that a large number of individuals on death row were former vets.

Ignoring returning soldiers well-being is another cost of the Iraq "war" that will come due.

4. True after every war...finally PTSD is accepted as real
though the military still has its way of disuading soldiers from pursuing a claim, as least while they're still in the military.
How many homeless are Viet Vets? I know it's a fairly high percentage. So many of those people didn't get the help they really needed.
Reagan really did a disservice when he cut funding for mental health and shoved many patients out on the streets to fend for themselves. And people still try to deify Reagan! What a sick joke!

5. Know what you mean about deifying Reagan
As I was channel surfing, I passed a Christian network station that had angel wings and a halo on Regan!

After, I stared at the set for a while to convince me that my eyes were not lying, I was reminded why I didn't watch TV. I got up and turned the set off.

Of course, you are safe from that crap by turning the TV set off. Remember the GQ cover that haloed *?
