Court Rejects Sentence for *Eco-Terrist*
i'm hoping jeff can get out inside of a year on parole. this case is just one that shows how lopsided the fight is. no doubt he committed a crime, but to receive the sort of treatment and sentence he did for destruction of property only is simply beyond the pale. when you consider that his sentence was spproximately 3 times what the average person committed of killing someone serves, this all seems a bit over the top to me. any how, i look to forward to seeing free in the not toooo distant future, hopefully.

Court overturns sentence in SUV fire
By Bill Bishop
The Register-Guard
Published: Thursday, February 15, 2007

The Oregon Court of Appeals on Wednesday overturned the 22-year sentence given to environmental activist Jeffrey Michael Luers for burning three SUVs at the former Romania truck lot and for trying to set fire to the Tyree Oil Co. in Eugene.

The court upheld all 10 of Luers' felony convictions from his 2001 trial, but ruled that he was improperly sentenced to back-to-back prison terms in each of the crimes.

Luers, 28, is considered a "political prisoner" among some activists who contend his 22-year, eight-month sentence is disproportionately harsh, considering that no one was injured in either crime and damage to the SUVs was estimated at less than $50,000.

The ruling leaves Luers, who already has served six years, facing a total sentence of between 11 years, four months and 13 years, two months, Chief Deputy Lane County District Attorney Alex Gardner said Wednesday.

1. I don't think his crimes are cool but I can't endorse such a sentence.
Does seem disproportionate.

2. This ought to be treated like any similar arson
People burn shit down all of the time- seems a no-brainer to me that this guy is treated proportionally.

3. Don't you know property is more important than people?
That's why the harsh sentence.

Bush can slaughter 100,000 innocent people in Iraq, and utterly smash their infracture and destroy civil order-- but, look!, he's on top of the world! He gets to run their country and steal their oil.

But burn an SUV or an oil company, and you get the book thrown at you.

Something's wrong with this picture. Very, very wrong.
