Deadline Finds Tent City Still Occupied

Deadline Finds Tent City Still Occupied

Monday's 6 a.m. deadline came and went for homeless people who received eviction notices to vacate New Tent City on north B Street.

More than 40 homeless people have been living at the vacant lot near downtown Sacramento. As of 7 a.m. about half the campsites were vacated.

Dozens of campsites litter the property and there is no running water or bathrooms, but for many of the homeless, it has been home.

"It's where I come to lay down at night," said Evangeline Deutsch who lives in the tent city. "I sit and relax, talk to friends and hang out."

Union Pacific owns the land and several no trespassing signs are on the property. According to UP spokesman James Barnes, the company received complaints from nearby businesses.
