Whatcha think? Health Teacher told my son's class that if they have sex now, they are virtually |
|
GUARANTEED to get a STD. "STDs are now so prevalent, if you choose to have sex now, you WILL get one of them."
I can understand explaining all the risks. I can understand recommending abstinence (not that they will listen to that), but "You are GUARANTEED to get a STD" is a little much.
He also preaches abstinence only as the best method of BC, but also has talked about Birth Control and Condoms, so I'm cool with that. This bogus guaranteed STD is ridiculous though.
What do you think about this tactic? He's lying to the kids.

Kids are not stupid. Once they figure him out, they will lose all respect and his teaching will become useless to them.

re: the situation and urge that the teacher be honest and upfront about all aspects of the discussion and also commend the teacher for being open in discussing birth control rather than just abstinence.

statistically there are good odds.
when i was in high school (1996-2000) i was in a school program called "Postponing sexual involvement" and we went to the middle school n warned of the dangers of sex at such a young age...... back then the statistic for genital herpes was 1 in 5 sexually active people had it. im pretty sure thats changed to 1 in 4 or 1 in 3 in the last few years, but im not entirely sure of that.
either way, pretty crazy!

13. Of course there's a risk when you have sex, but not everyone who has sex gets a STD. |
|
There are ways of protecting oneself against them and if you have sex with a partner who is STD free, how do you get STD from that partner? He's just flat-out lying to the kids.

and is off base saying if u do it at all ull get it...
im just saying that statistically chances are high for something like herpes because most people dont even realize they have it. most people dont show symptoms until later in life... like 15-20 years later in life in a lot of cases.
we taught abstinence until you are done with school(for practical reasons, not religious or moral) and protection if you couldnt wait.

40. You can wait to have sex until you are 80 |
|
and only ever have it with one partner and still get an STD. The likelihood of getting an STD rises with each partner, of course. Maybe your child misunderstood what was said. It is possible to get an STD with your first partner the first time. Maybe that is what the teacher was trying to explain.

30. This is a fundy talking point. And he is wrong when he says "abstinence only" |
|
is the best form of BC. It is only until one no longer abstains. Then, not so much. Does he also exaggerate the high failure rate of condoms. A latex condom used properly will protect against most STDs as well as being nearly 100% effective against pregnancy. The key word being "properly".

So if they wait, say, 10-15 years they won't catch an STD? Only teens catch STDs?

However, it doesn't matter when you start having sex or how many people you sleep with. What really matters is that the risk is greatly reduced by wearing condoms. Honestly, most STD aren't much of a big deal and are easily curable.

that someone coming of age now will at some point contract an STD? It would seem to me that the longer one is sexually active in the general dating pool the higher the chance that they will contract an STD.
