Two exotic monkeys that were stolen this morning from the Wild World of Animals compound in Washington County have been returned apparently unharmed.

Just before 9 a.m., Kemmerer, 42, received an anonymous call from a woman who said her son’s friends had stolen the animals about 2:30 a.m. and later sold one of them to a family in Marianna. The woman tracked down both animals and met Kemmerer just before noon at a Bentleyville gas station to return them.
The woman, whom Kemmerer declined to identify, told him a group of teen boys climbed an eight-foot fence to enter his compound because they had heard a rumor that he was growing marijuana in a greenhouse. Instead they found Gwendolyn, a 14-year-old spot nose guenon weighing 12 pounds, and Lucy, a 5-year-old mona guenon weighing 7 pounds.
“I’m surprised Kenya or the other monkeys did not tear them to pieces,” Kemmerer said. “They do not like any disruption in their routine or their surroundings, and they are extremely protective and possessive of those they know and who take care of them.”
