We Progressives know that one of the greatest threats to American democracy in recent years has been the advent of corporate media consolidation which swallows up smaller media outlets, blocks the creation of new outlets, and floods the press and airwaves with overwhelmingly corporate-friendly, right-wing propaganda. (i.e. Clear Channel Radio featuring Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck; Fox News, etc. etc. etc.) The American center-left has been extremely slow and ineffective in responding to this major component of the right-wing's ongoing strategy to control the nation's media so as to divert Americans from the real issues and from the truth about what is really happening to us at the hands of the greedy, filthy-rich, corporate power-mongers who control this country. What is really happening in this country compared to what we are actually told in the corporate media is shocking. Indeed, it was a very compliant, if not outright helpful, corporate media that assisted Bush/Cheney in misleading us into the Iraq War debacle. Bush's right-wing allies control the FCC whose Bush-appointed chairman is now trying to make it even easier for large media corporations to further expand their dominance. A bill has been introduced in the US Senate to block this effort. There is nothing more important in the Progressive movement than to counter corporate right-wing media consolidation and establish a much stronger national media presence of its own. Then send a note to your Senators urging them to support the bi-partisan bill and other efforts to reverse corporate media consolidation.
