I think he's partisan. He's always bugged me, since I saw him cream on election night when the FL electoral votes were in play.

9. There are few in the news media whom do the job they should. |
|
Ted Koppel, Bob Schieffer, and Bill Moyers come to mind. I think Russert does a pretty good job. I guess I'd put him at or near the top of the second tier (if I can borrow a currently over-used phrase). I don't think the question he posed to Hillary Clinton during the last debate that had her stumbling was unreasonable, if that's what's behind this post. It wasn't a gotcha question like Sen. Clinton claimed.

the set up of the drivers license question to cover up its being two different questions - it was too well done as to be an accident.
His set up was about a question about a Washington State, Homeland Security approved, car accident rate cutting, insurance cost cutting 3 tier drivers license where illegals do not get an "ID" type drivers license with Russert asking how Hillary felt about the Gov of NY suggesting such a system for New York (granted he left out the background on the 3 tier system - and indeed did not even note that it was 3 tiered - so as to not inform the audience or Chris Matthrews).
He then morphed that topic into the hot button "drivers license for illegals" with the security ID implied - hoping to and succeeding in getting Hillary to focus on the 3 tier question and not notice that the long set up did not totally describe the 3 tier concept - and thus allow him to twist it.

His show's advertisers are nothing but defense contractors, chemical conglomerates, and other mega business interests that have no use for advertising their products. They pay to control the message, and they get what they pay for.
Russert himself is so focussed on maintaining his access that he happily allows people like Cheney to "control the message".
He's also the lesser son of a father who worked in the same field; a man who would not have reached his position without his dad's help. That's something we seem beset by these days.

20. I think he's a lazy interviewer, who tries to appear tough, but |
|
never actually follows through on the tough questions.
I think he behaves cowed in the presence of power -- not good in a political interview.
I don't know what his real political affiliations are, but he's sure let the Bush cronies slide over these past years. I suspect that's as much to do with bad technique and talent as personal feelings.

26. Lots of incorrect info in this thread... |
|
Hey folks,
I'm no Tim Russert apologist, and he kind of irks me sometimes too, but it's not that hard to get accurate info on the guy.
His father is not a journalist, he's a blue collar guy from Buffalo. Russert is a lawyer with a political background, first working for Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D) as Chief of Staff, then working for NY Governor Mario Cuomo (D) as counselor.
I don't like the "gotcha" questions either, but he's no Republican. He probably bows to the pressure of his corporate bosses.
I read his book about him and his father, and he seems like a decent guy. Why not write him at NBC and tell him your concerns?

I didn't say that I thought Russert WASN'T doing a crappy job moderating the debates. I think his performance has been dismal.
I said that his FATHER is a blue collar guy from Buffalo, and not a journalist.
I never said Tim Russert was a blue collar guy.

Asshole.
“You know, Tim, you used to be such a rabid Democrat when you worked for Pat Moynihan,” said the executive. “But now that you’ve gotten a glimpse of who’s handing out the money in this business, you’ve become quite the Jaycee. Were you wrong about everything you used to believe so strongly?”
“I still believe,” Russert said, leaning across the table. “I believe in everything I ever did. But I also know that I never would have become moderator on Meet The Press if my employers were uncomfortable with me. And, given the amount of money at stake, millions of dollars, I don’t blame them. This is business.”
The executive agreed. “But are you concerned about losing yourself? You know, selling out?”
Russert pounded the table. “Integrity is for paupers!”
