renounced his claim and backed his son. Here's some night time reading for you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Carlos

6. does it mention in there why he renounced? or JC's special relationship
with Franco?

lots of Jews in Spain 'renounced' their religion a few hundred years ago, too

you could do a little night time reading on that

7. If he were as
close to Franco as you say, why did he push so hard for democracy and not follow in Franco's footsteps? Huh?

8. Because there would have been a coup?
Edited on Sun Nov-11-07 06:46 PM by 1932
To praise someone for going from a dictatorship to a constitutional monarchy is OK, I guess, but sort of setting the bar low. What's wrong with totally abdicating?

I would be eternally impressed by any of the current crop of monarchs if they chose to abdicate.

15. Are you askin why Juan Carlos chose to have elections rather than carry on as monarchy
with no elections?

That's the question I was answering.

12. there are those who say he was involved in the coup, and chickened out

when he saw it failing

but me, I always trust the king. I always trust a man who was close to someone like Franco.

and what do you think the alternative to opposing the alternative to democracy might have been for him?

don't you think the Romanovs would have LOVED the chance to institute democracy in Russia, and live out their lives fat and happy on the public dole?

huh?

5. And Aznar was a fascist as were his father and grandfather.
King Juan Carlos had a moment of greatness. That does not give him a pass for all future actions.
