Reid & Pelosi: "Unfortunately, tonight the President demonstrated he has not listened to Americans'
Democratic responses to Bush's State of the Union speech

RAW STORY
Published: Tuesday January 23, 2007

Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker Nancy Pelosi today released the following statement on President Bush's State of the Union Address.

.........................

"Unfortunately, tonight the President demonstrated he has not listened to Americans' single greatest concern: the war in Iraq. The overwhelming majority of Americans, military leaders, and a bipartisan coalition in Congress oppose the President's plan to escalate the war. Democrats, Republicans, and the bipartisan Iraq Study Group have offered the President a plan to end our open-ended commitment to Iraq, transition the U.S. mission, and begin the phased redeployment of American troops. While the President continues to ignore the will of the country, Congress will not ignore this President's failed policy. His plan will receive an up-or-down vote in both the House and the Senate, and we will continue to hold him accountable for changing course in Iraq.

1. There was a pundit on some show the other night trying
to claim that in Nov. we voted to win in Iraq.

I did not see * shake hands with Reid on his way out. Did I miss it?

5. Reid was Behind George
when his *ness went to shake hands with the generals. I kept expecting GWB to turn around and acknowledge Reid but never saw him do it. He kept his back toward Reid the whole time. Intentionally?

10. I heartily agree with you. "Protocol" is no excuse for applauding
a mass murderer, liar, and election thief!

I believe the Dems could have met before the speech, knowing they would be put in this position in the traditional SOTU format, and come up with a better way to show the American voters who gave them this chance that they were NOT going to let things plod along as usual in our seat of government.

"Protocol" may be a good enough answer for some; but what about the average American citizen who is so fed up with this administration and its corporate wars? Don't THEY deserve better than to tune in and see the Dems they put in office standing and applauding the man they've all come to distrust and even hate?

At the very least, there should have been one helluva lot LESS of those cheery signs of approval from Dems during this speech. It made me sick. And I'll bet it made a lot of voters wonder why they bothered to vote for Dems this last time....

12. They applauded the ideas in the speech, knowing full well that * didn't mean a word he said.
I'm sure they thought not applauding would cause people to accuse them of making asses of themselves. And, of course, that's how it would have played in r/w media.

20. I was watching what she applauded
She did *not* applaud for everything. Nor did the Dems when there were shots of them. And her level of applause was carefully calibrated, I believe.

I agree that what they *did* applaud were the *ideas*.

15. There was a lot less. I can't on this machine but if you watch
this night and compare it with the last one, there was a big difference.

I'd like to have this crew impeached, indicted and convicted yesterday but, imho, tonight went pretty much as it needed to. Picking your fights when the Thugs own the media is a good idea.

17. I was initially irritated by their clapping too,
but figured the same as you just said... they all would have been drug over the coals if they didn't. You are also right that tonight was very different. Thank y ou for your post.

23. I agree.
During one of Clinton's SOTU addresses, the repubs remained in their seats with their hands in their laps. Disapproval can be shown.

13. Watch her blink like mad, she looked like a Vietnam era POW
or one of the USS Pueblo crew, blinking out T---O---R---T---U---R---E.

By contrast, Big Dick looked rather stuffed. He barely blinked, indeed, barely moved except to stuff something in his mouth. Was it nitroglycerine, or a piece of candy???????

7. While we're talking about not listening to the American people...
Why is the surge still in progress? I thought democrats were going to have the guts not to fund it.

I don't understand why Speaker Pelosi just doesn't say....plain and simple...

Mr. President, we will ONLY fund the safe return of our soldiers!!..that's it!!

People are dieing while politics is in the forefront. The Iraqi people do not want us there.

(kpete, thank you for always being on top of the news.)

18. Check out this gem at the end of the rawstory page
Statement released by California Representative Pete Stark (D-CA), Chairman of the Ways and Means Health Subcommittee:

*snip*

“For the most part, President Bush delivered tonight’s State of the Union in a state of denial. I’m glad it’s his second-to-last,” Stark concluded.

:applause: :woohoo: :applause:

28. Pelosi and Reid have demonstrated they are not listening
Edited on Wed Jan-24-07 03:14 PM by Luckyduck
We did not elect the democrats so they would write letters and ask Bush nicely to change his ways.

No one expected Bush to be responsive to our needs. We have a system of checks and balances and Pelosi and Reid are supposed to force change.

Pelosi and Reid must uphold the Constitution and Impeach Bush Now!

As Kucinich stated "there is only one way to end the war and it is not to engage in a debate with the president"
Bush doesn't give a shit what we think, nor is he capable of thinking himself. We must removed him from power and bring the troops home.
