Soldier's Letter: "Why Haven't Your Daughters Joined Up?
I was a "Soldier Once and Young", Company A, 228th ASHB, 1st Air Cav, June 67-June 68 (Chinook crewchief/door gunner). We got lecures by our commanders of the horrors of what they (NVA and the Soviets) did to POW's as reasons of "Why We Fight". I was not aware "we" waterboardered then, but I was aware that we threw "them" out of helicopters. But at least such behaviour was not the policy of the CIC.

I thought I was fighting in 'Nam for freedom, and now I find the CIC thinks doing what the Soviets did is fine. I'm appalled by all of this. We might not get "actionable intelligence" out of POW's by treating them by the standards of the Geneva Convention (do unto others as you would have them do unto you), but at least we'd be doing the right thing, the moral Christian thing.

It's never too late to apologize for having done wrong. Instead of trying to decide if the Turks committed genocide on the Armenians back in 1915 we could apologize for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. IF Hiroshima was "right", then My Lai was "right". Neither was right in my opinion.

I'd like someone in the media to pose this question to Bush: "If this GWOT is such a damn fine deal, and seeing as how we have trouble getting enough recruits for the military, why haven't your daughters joined up?" Sure they'd be targeted by the enemy, but didn't Bush say "Bring them on?"

1. Jenna and Bar Jr. would be targets, like Uday and Qusay
So it's understandable that George doesn't want to risk his progeny.

But what I would like to know is why the media cheerleaders for pointless invasions (Rush Limbaugh, Jonah Goldberg, and others too nauseating--I mean, numerous to mention) aren't exhorting their listeners and readers to join up. With all the millions that these superpatriots reach every day, it's astonishing to me that they never tell their people to join the military. All those hours of air time to fill, all those column inches of space to write in, and never a word to their loyal fans about fighting -- really fighting with guns and ammunition and (oh yeah) people firing back -- for the country they claim to hold so dear.

9. the hat?
Is that real or photoshopped? That arrogant POS has a 43 on his hat? Holy shit, for some reason that is even more nauseating than anything I've seen or heard out of him this week & that says a a lot about my repulsion at the hat!

10. Here's what Jenna Bush has actually said on the subject
Edited on Tue Nov-13-07 11:35 AM by rocknation
...(T)here are many ways to serve our country, and I think my skills are better suited for teaching and representing the U.S. in Latin America through UNICEF. I respect the men and women of our country who are over there fighting. It is an unbelievably selfless thing to do. But if people really thought about it, they would know it's not even a practical question.

She's obviously not afraid of something happening to her when she goes overseas. So if Iraq is out of the question, why not Kuwait? Or she could teach at a stateside military base and have the best of both worlds. Anyway, here's what I'd tell a recruiter:

"There are many ways to serve our country, and I think my skills are better suited to holding down my job, consuming goods and services, paying the resulting taxes, voting, participating in keeping my government honest, and saving for the future. I respect the men and women of our country who are over there fighting--it's an unbelievably selfless thing to do. But I think that it's even more selfless to avoid becoming a wounded veteran who neither the government, my family, or society has the resources to support--if, that is, I made it back home at all. Given the competence level of our current commander-in-chief, unfortunately, that's VERY likely to happen. I've really thought about it, and that just isn't a practical way for me to end up."

11. It's a stupid question
To me a better question for Bush would be "Have you encouraged your daughters to pursue a career in the military and more specifically to volunteer for service in Iraq or Afghanistan" not "Why haven't they enlisted".

We no longer have a draft. If you're in the military, it's because you want to be. Why blame Jenna and Barbara because some other kid chose to join the military during wartime and ended up becoming becoming a casualty? How is that their fault?
