We Have Code Pink, Pakistan Has the Wedding Crashers

Move over Code Pink, read on for a fine example of Pakistani women’s activism, call them the Wedding Crashers (copied in it’s entirety because it would be impossible to paraphrase this wonderful report):

“Five women activists of Pakistan People’s Party from Lahore nearly broke the police cordon before they were arrested at the Committee Chowk on Friday.

The five ladies got a unique idea of dodging the police in an ambulance before they finally decided to walk toward the Liaquat Bagh as even ambulance were denied entry beyond the Committee Chowk.

The moment they came out of the ambulance, one of the lady inquired from a policeman, how they could go beyond Committee Chowk.

“It seems the roads are blocked but we have to attend an important marriage where should we go from here,” the lady asked.

The policeman was quick to felicitate them by allowing them to pass through one of the barricades on the main Committee Chowk.

The moment all the five ladies succeeded in crossing the barricade, they started chanting slogans “Jeeay Bhutto.”

This brought panic among the standing police officials, who realized that those ladies were actually the workers of Pakistan People’s Party and wanted to go to Liaquat Bagh for public gathering.

All the five ladies then sat on the road and chanted slogans in favour of Pakistan People’s Party as lady police officials quickly arrived at the scene and all five activists were virtually dragged into a police van and were taken into custody.”
