Edited on Fri Nov-16-07 07:18 PM by BornagainDUer

2. Real questions vs CNN propaganda
If Hillary was really smart, she would have answered a different question. ;)

3. Thank you
I am shocked at the DU threads where DU'ers then go on to give their own preference as to which shiny object they like best. ***ing INSANE.

The correct answer would have been a totally appalled... excuse me? done with a perfect sneer of contempt and outraged that she would even be asked that question.

5. Not a good strategy.
Although the proper reaction is the one you described (and I totally agree with you), she had to play along and answer. Otherwise, the next day everyone would have paid even MORE attention to it and criticized her for being bitter/uptight/elitist/angry/mean/etc. Better just to give a dumb answer to a dumb question and move on.

4. Give the young woman a break
Maria Luisa, the UNLV student who asked Hillary Clinton whether she preferred "diamonds or pearls" at last night's debate wrote on her MySpace page this morning that CNN forced her to ask the frilly question instead of a pre-approved query about the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.

"Every single question asked during the debate by the audience had to be approved by CNN," Luisa writes. "I was asked to submit questions including "lighthearted/fun" questions. I submitted more than five questions on issues important to me. I did a policy memo on Yucca Mountain a year ago and was the finalist for the Truman Scholarship. For sure, I thought I would get to ask the Yucca question that was APPROVED by CNN days in advance."

Now, Luisa is getting "swamped" with critical e-mails.

8. Fuck Maria Luisa! She did the goddamn deed FIRST now she
tries to boost her ratings among the dissenting. If she had any balls she would have told the story BEFORE or DURING the circus. It's like the people who volunteer to go to Iraq, find out it isn't their cup of tea--how the hell could they not know what it was about in the first place--then have their loved ones whine and cry in public.

Any population of people who are so cowed by the limelight have a serious mental problem. Deferencitis?

FUCKING QUIT!!

6. Now she's condemned because of a frivolous question she DIDN'T plant?
Nobody on that platform wasn't serious. Nobody endures this petty humiliation day in and day out for a frivolous reason.

You hate her. You don't actually know why. So you condemn every insignificant thing she does. SHE does.

13. Hypertensive much?
Yeah, it was frivolous. You wanted Hillary to yell at her for not asking a serious question? Yeah, that would have worked out nicely.

can take charge. Americans want a leader who does not pander to this trivial shit!

14. She should have said what my mother said when someone posed a really distasteful question:
Well, if you'll forgive me for not answering that question,
I'll forgive you for asking it.

15. So she could come off as snob? Not a good idea.
It was a frivolous question, not a distasteful one. The young lady didn't ask her if she preferred pads or tampons for God's sake.

17. It's distasteful
Because that question assumes that as a woman she would have an answer to that question. Are men asked a stupid question about shiny baubles?

but not distasteful.

22. Yes. Another kid in an MTV interview asked Bill Clinton if he preferred boxers or briefs.
And he answered the question (boxers), and was similarly criticized for participating in frivolity.

26. If you listened to Hillary talking about how 90-yr-old women come up to her after her campaign
speeches and say how their mothers were not allowed to vote, and now they may live to see
the first woman President in America; and if you listen to her talk about the "boys club"
and how difficult it's been for women to make any headway and gain entry into that
all-male bastion, then I think a question about whether she prefers diamonds or pearls
(and that being the last question of the debate, as well) did not serve the purpose
of advancing women as serious candidates.

19. It was a throw away, 20 second question at the end of a spirited debate.
There were questions about foriegn policy vis-a-vis Iran, Social Security, health care, the Iraq debacle, immigration, oh, and the Bush administration...

just sayin'

She didn't react at all like someone would to a surprise question. She didn't miss a beat. Not that I really care since these debates are nothing but American Idol anyway.
