Poll question: Anyone consider this sexist?
being a sports fan means that if you're a guy, you don't cry like a little girl when you get your feelings hurt.

2. I don't get it..
What connection is there between being a sport's fan and emotional sensitivity? Pro-players cry all the time when they lose huge games, titles, etc.

4. Not Sexist
"being a sports fan means you don't cry like a baby when you get your feelings hurt."

SEE - just change a few words and the phrase isn't sexist, but contrasting "guys" to "little girls" makes it sexist. Little boys cry, too.

Being a good sport means you don't call people foul names like a guy when your team makes a bad play.

Also sexist

9. I don't see anything wrong with it at all.
If I (a guy) whined and complained and someone said, "what a baby, you're crying like a little school girl," I'd reexamine my behavior and come to the conclusion that the person was probably right.

I was crying like a little school girl.

There's no crying in sports Forkboy.

10. how about cryin like a little boy? why wouldnt that be appropriate?
because that is not what we do with our boys. we want our boys, and men to behave differently we call them a girl to get better behavior. we never say to a girl, quit acting like a boy. you dont see anything inherently in this?

Edited on Fri Nov-16-07 11:24 PM by seabeyond
anyway, not a big deal to me. we have had this in our culture for a while. i have made the people (all boys and man) in my house aware of this little phenomenon but i dont make a big deal about it. and in jest i will every once in a while say your hair looks like a girl.... or something. but we do it in laughter to make it lite and play, not to take too seriously

13. Oh yes, I agree. I think it should be school boy if
the person involved is male.

To do otherwise is inappropriate.

Just for the record, if someone said little school girl to me, I'd yawn, as opposed to getting bent out of shape.

20. And just for the record
We're not bent of shape here.Me and a friend are having a good time with this.We think it's sexist, but you're really flattering yourself (something you seem familiar with doing.I'm guessing not many others do it for you.) if you think it's got me bent out of shape.

Most bent out of shape polls don't include the "I Have Fudge" option.

I don't know what to say if you really think it does, but the idea that you will makes me giggle (like a schoolgirl, naturally. Just saving you the trouble of having to be sexist yourself all over again! You can thank me later.).

I also, honestly, can't imagine having so much invested emotionally in any athlete or team like you do. Reminds me of Mrs. Finkle in Ace Ventura "What a sports nut, huh?"

Which is why it's kind of sad that you'd let others affect you so much that being insulted by some random idiot causes you to rethink your behavior.Kind of weak for a such a manly sports fan as yourself.

24. Well, hell YES it's sexist! And I can't believe that there are DUers who can't see that.
Speaking as someone who was once "a little girl", this kind of shit pissed me off even way back 50 years ago when I was a little girl.

I was the oldest of three girls in my family. I prided myself on my fearlessness, I grew up determined to be strong and smart. Every time I came across conventional wisdom proclaiming that females were weaker or stupider or more emotional, it just made me more determined to prove that it was lies.

To use being "like a girl" as an insult, is to assert that girls are lesser beings -- that being a girl is at best a misfortune, and at worst a state of being deserving of mockery and derision.

They should be so lucky as to be as fuckin' cool and courageous as a little girl.

35. Sorry, didn't mean to upset you.
My friend and I thought it was, too, but I guess being a male sports fan means have you to be an imbecile to be a "real" sports fan. So I'm on my way to buy a rainbow colored afro and some body paint, and I'm jotting down some insults for the "girlie men" I see so I can hang with the cool guys. ;)
