Wow! Another case of walking the walk! Congrats to Chad Ely, and it looks like a great idea! One more step toward a green economy and the WGA!

Go Dennis! :woohoo:

The prise of diesel is astronomical right now.

15. As far as cooling goes, you could use filtered oil from fast food places
You'd have to remove the impurities, but since cooking oil is nonconductive, yet disperses heat very well, it would work just fine.

I recall a story that was on TechTV once a long time ago (before it became G4)- I think it was on The Screensavers- about a guy that immersed his PC in a bathtub full of cooking oil as a cooling solution. Apparently, it worked like a dream. Not that *I* would try it or anything....

5. There is a lot of
that action with veggie oil up here in New York State. Happy Dennis is on this alternative fuel research since it sounded like nancy and harry were going to eliminate its funding from a bill the repukes wanted to go through faster.

Rec'd.

7. Give it a few months and Kucinich will be throwing his support behind Edwards
in the Iowa caucuses, just like he did in 2004.

11. Okay, that's fine if you want to throw out the computer
and never fix it, or upgrade it. But, I could never imagine having to dig in all that oil to replace a hard drive or put in more ram. My son and I have had the same computers for over 2 years now, just replacing those things that need to be upgraded. I couldn't imagine what techs would have to dress like just to fix a loose card. Yuck! The service area would have more gunk on it than the dirtiest kitchen. Oh, and when it springs a leak, what will the furniture and floor be like.

What a really bad idea. Let's leave the tech nerds to play around with this concept.

16. A sealed case with a drain would solve that problem very neatly
The final solution would most likely resemble the various water cooling solutions out there, though.

See my post above for a more extreme example.

20. Of course, Harry would never use such a contraption...
But, since Dennis' campaign has had it up and running for 8 months, maybe even Harry would notice!

18. uh... WHAT?!?
Edited on Mon Nov-19-07 12:49 AM by Aya Reiko
Anyone who had to repair or has upgraded their comps will quickly see this as a fundamentally bad idea. And I'll bet good money the energy saved will be minuscule, at best. And as you add in all the bells and whistles...

Actually, on second thought. This is a totally moronic idea. Think. Unless you add in a circulation system, where do you think the heat is going to go? But by adding in a circulation system, you completely defeat the purpose of this whole idea in the first place.
Not to mention, look at the picture in the link, see something ultra important missing? If you notice, there are no peripherals. No disc drives, no vid cards, no sound cards, nothing. The devil is in the details. It may sound good on paper, but it falls apart when you start implementing it.

Edit-- Read up some more on this idea, and there seems to be a couple of major flaws aside from the circulation issue. One, the oil will eat away at the case. Cooking oil, though albeit a weak one, is an acid. Meaning, every so often, you'll be forced to replace the case. Two, oil is not non-conductive. And in case you didn't know, comps have powerful power supplies within them.

To be honest, I rather not submerge delicate hardware in acid. Even if it is a weak acid.

19. Actually, this technique has been used to run complete systems at 100% speed for months.
Read through the geeky links at http://www.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/nbbw.cgi?Gw=oil+cooled+computer for more information. As a practical matter, the peak heat which was reached after running the computer at max speed took 12 hours to attain, and was a bit too high for comfort, although nothing failed. Take a look at your usage rates, if you know how, and if you hit over 10% for over 10 minutes you'd be in a minority.

Your "critique" regarding the picture is without merit.

21. Interesting.
Not surprising that he would be willing to try experimental technologies, but this is one I've never heard of.

I think I'll pass this link on to my son, who has fans running around his 'puter 24/7 and is always overheating things. :D
