Hello Japanese citizens

is your country so low on food stocks that you have to eat whales?

with the oceans sick and dying, can't you leave the whales alone in their despair?

please.

1. Most Japanese citizens won't touch the stuff.
Most are also against the hunt. It's the govt at fault, here.

2. I'd add to that:
Are you so ashamed of catching whales to eat them, and charge
exorbitant money for their flesh, that you have to lie about the
reason you are hunting them, calling it for "reasearch purposes?"

I would also add that not all of Japan feels that way. There are
plenty of Japanese that abhor the idea, and think that the whole
whale hunt is revolting. My brother is married to one--I have impeccable
sources for my info! :-)

8. OK, OK, I should have guarded my flank, there!
At five foot one and about 98 pounds, I don't think she would even make a convincing Minke,
and I'd wager that after 30 years on dry land, even a whale could pronounce an "L" better
than she can!

3. I wonder is there any activism in Japan
There are lots of stories in the news about this.

4. I ate in a place that served whale once
On our last trip to Tokyo, we found ourselves in a small restaurant without English menus. After some back and forth with my bad Japanese and the proprieter's terrible English, we ordered draft beer and a stir fry of beef and garlic. As we ate, I amused myself by trying to read the hand-written signs announcing specials. One sign said (in katakana) kujira baakon. Whale bacon. At the time I thought I must have read it wrong, but it turns out they meant exactly that.

An elderly Japanese friend tells me that, after the war when food was scarce, whale was valued for its high fat content. She has fond memories of whale in school lunches.
