TV is one hidious frame of complete crap |
|
If it is not the endless flying graphics it is the morning shows . I don't watch TV but my wife puts it on to see the weather , don't know why , they are never right . I prefer to look out the window or step outside and I know what the weather is , there is nothing anyone can do to change it .
But these morning shows and news with all the crowds of happy cheering voices is just to much to handle for me anyway .
I have alwasy had the impression these shows are designed to keep people from thinking , that everything is just fine and dandy whem in fact it is far from it .
Always some drug company telling you to ask your doctor if some pill is right for you and they seep into peoples minds they need this drug when in fact they don't , they can easily start the symptems by sugeestion alone . Then along comes viva viagra as if this is desired , I'll bet women really look forward to out of control men running around as a loaded gun . Dancing and partying to viva viagra , how sick is this .
I have to say this is yet another part of lifes illusions I never thought I would see . It's either a car you can't afford , food , clothes , personal products or a drug or some cheap product that should never have made it's way into the market place at all .

1. My grandmother asked me why I don't watch television. |
|
I told her that I was very happy not watching television because I didn't want so much crap any more.
She didn't understand, but she does watch a lot of television.

2. I like to think back to the days when the news was delivered by a |
|
man (back in those days it was all men) like John Cameron Swayze, Chet and David, Walter. Serious, no personal editorializing, just the news, straight. The news media would do well to look back on those days, their ratings were through the roof back then...

3. One thing I have noticed in years of late - you are all sick and dying |
|
or might have something. Loads of medical commercials, bill boards, and on radio.
You start to think 'shit, I better get to the dr cause I got something bad I just probably don't know it'
You go, all is ok, a few months later after a bunch of 'you should check with your dr' you feel the need to go again lest you die :)

You're sitting there watching tv thinking "hey, I kind of like this show..." and then comes the commercial and you find out what the advertisers think of you.

4. I watch public television several times a week. |
|
They have some very interesting nature programs and history programs. The news is mostly about who got shot today in the seedy part of town.

5. I was on a cruise ship a few months ago |
|
The only news on the tv in the cabin was "CNN International". (yes, of course the ocean outside the window was a lot more interesting) But this was nothing like what we get in the US as CNN News. In fact about the only thing it had in common with the US version was the letters "CNN".
I sat there watching this literally with my jaw dropped. There was serious coverage of the entire world from the perspective of the places where the events were happening. It was like suddenly being able to see after being blind.

6. To top it off, they push the garbage *during* the morning shows |
|
Out of curiosity, I recently tuned into one of those shows. We learned the latest shoe fashions, how to apply makeup, which costume jewelry to purchase and the best new electronic gadgets for gift giving. More like watching an infomercial than lousy infotainment.
Yup, It will be a few years before I try "tv for dumb asses" again. :-)

They just had a great program on the Wildebeest migration in Kenya. Fascinating, albeit I'm having bad dreams about those giant crocodiles. Also, Al Gore's 'Current TV' channel is a great insight into teens and twenty-somethings' lives. Campy and trite CNN has sagged below Fox in my opionion. Never thought that would happen!

9. I haven't watched TV in more than 20 years |
|
and I don't believe I have missed a thing. When I do happen to see and hear it as I'm passing by someone else's TV set, the whole mess just sounds unendurable.

14. Same here. Twenty years and counting. If TV does have something good, |
|
you can just wait and get it from Netflix. I have to listen to TV at the laundromat, and that's always enough to make me grateful not to have one.

You're enjoying watching an excellent tv show on dvd that you could have seen...on broadcast tv...almost 20 years ago. And at that time, you might also have enjoyed the sense of community people had over the program as they tried to figure it out. Sorry you missed out on all that. Doesn't this tell you that tv isn't all bad?
Note that I do tend to agree--probably 75% of what's available on tv is mindless crap.

I'm really tired of some hack telling me what I should ask my doctor. Why the hell should I be doing my doctors job in the first place? Should "my doctor" be telling me what medication is right for me? Never have I seen such a large group of men gathered in one place, celebrating their erectile dysfunction. TV SUCKS! The other night I caught, or got roped into watching some piece of garbage called "The Next Great American Band" or some crap. The sad thing is, one of the most original, greatest band on the show has apparently been voted off by Americas ability to discern great music. Most of this society wouldn't know or recognize greatness in anything these days if it jumped up and bit them on the ass. We celebrate mediocrity. We race to the bottom.

13. I haven't had TV (the service) for four years. |
|
I am becoming aware that there are differences not only between my views of the culture, but my basic way of thinking as a result of that decision.
My youngest occasionally watches cartoon videotapes which I recorded off tv about 10 years ago for his older brothers. He now perseverates on the idea that he "needs a mag-light flashlight".
TV, and especially commercials, alter our ability to perceive reality, they do not simply shape our desires.

18. What the hell happened to TLC -- The Learning Channel? |
|
They used to have specials on implosion, the Junkyard Wars, the effects of extreme heat/cold on a person. Now it's all what not to wear, flip this house, tattoo shops. I don't have anything against mindless entertainment on occasion, but that's all they have. There are no educational shows on this channel anymore.
Today I saw another study that shows that reading in America is down. Oh really? I could not have guessed that. :sarcasm:
I sent my sister a gift subscription to Jim Hightower's Lowdown Report. It comes out once a month & is only four pages long -- it takes me about 15 minutes to read. She told me I should have saved my money cuz she doesn't have time to read. :wtf: Her husband is one of the most ignorant people I know. A year or so ago they told us they would like to relocate to Atlanta. A few weeks ago, when they were visiting, my husband mentioned the drought in Georgia & asked if they were still thinking of relocating. He had no idea about the drought. He had not heard of the superbug. But he did know what sports teams were playing that weekend.
I like to kick back & relax as much as anyone, but I also like to know what's going on in the world, not just my little corner. I know I sound like a judgemental bitch, but how are things going to change if people don't know &, more importantly, don't care what's going on?
My husband says it's denial. People only want to hear that things are going well. They don't want to face the truth that we have very serious problems & issues to address. And they certainly don't want to hear that they may have to change their comfortable life styles to make necessary changes.
Arghh!!! Somedays I wish I were blissfully ignorant. But then again, there would be this continuous little nag in my brain warning me that I should really pay attention.
Arghh! Enough. Rant off.

People know all about the latest score in some game or all about Nicole Smith or the shaved headed dim wad . They know all about the last Tv series or the latest car or other game board or cell phone but nothing about anything that really matters .
Maybe people need an escape but there are many better ways than to indulge the TV .

TVLand has Extreme Makeover now. It used to be a channel for classic TV. I guess they think Extreme Makeover is classic TV!
There was more variety on television when all we had were the networks, PBS and one or two independants :hide:
