Townsend’s goodbye to Bush: ‘You are such a man.’
Homeland Security Adviser Frances Fragos Townsend today sent President Bush a three-page handwritten letter announcing her resignation. A highlight from the letter:

In 1937, the playwright Maxwell Anderson wrote of President George Washington: There are some men who lift the age they inhabit, til all men walk on higher ground in their lifetime.

Mr. President, you are such a man.

See a full-size version of the letter HERE: http://thinkprogress.org/2007/11/19/townsends-goodbye-to-bush-you-are-such-a-man/.

22. In a way she's right. With Dubya around, don't we all look a little better by comparison?
Here's a few George Washington quotes, in case you want to explore further comparisons with Mr. Bush.

As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality.

Arbitrary power is most easily established on the ruins of liberty abused to licentiousness.

Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is better to be alone than in bad company.

It is better to offer no excuse than a bad one.

It will be found an unjust and unwise jealousy to deprive a man of his natural liberty upon the supposition he may abuse it.

and the most important Washington quote of them all...

Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism.

39. I think the warning was hookergate...
And I don't think we still know what all went on behind the scenes with that. When you folks like Thomas Kontogiannis with a guilty plea and no passport waiting for sentencing, taking a "vacation" in Greece unbeknownst to the judge working under the guidance of some "government agency" over there. He was laundering money to help folks like Cunningham out, but where that all went with the CIA (Dusty Foggo, Porter Goss, etc.) is still anyone's guess.

37. Woah, at first I thought you were talking about Pete!
The Who had always been my favorite. It disheartened me when I heard reports that Pete supported the war earlier pretty heavily. But if you read these comments, it sounds like he's changed his tune recently. I was worried that he went back to the darkside with this subject line...

http://tomwatson.typepad.com/tom_watson/2006/06/the_man_who_hea.html

Sometimes it pays to watch the icons - especially those who prefer life off the pedestal. Oh, and something else. You may recall that Townshend supported the invasion of Iraq, and Britain's involvement. Well, he's changed his position a bit - and painfully - with an openness and honesty that's missing in Whitehall and Washington:

At first, personally knowing one of his torture victims, I wanted Sadam Hussein removed at any price. I also wanted to send a message to the Islamic world (again, a place full of many of my friends) that the West was run by dangerous men with powerful weapons and our going into Iraq to ‘tidy up’ was a better option for sending that message than dropping nuclear warheads on Afghanistan or Pakistan which has such deep and tenuous links with Britain. It is too easy to sanction war when you don’t know what is actually happening to the soldiers and civilians in the conflict, and pretty much all British newspapers have kept everyone abreast of the true horrors. The Independent through Robert Fisk has been a leader in speaking of the reality of the conflict in Iraq, and the real ‘price’ of removing Sadam. I won’t go back on my initial support for the invasion, but I feel blooded and humbled, deeply, deeply ashamed at the way things have turned out.

55. Why do these women want to be Eva Braun to Der Fuehrer?
Hell, my girlfriend and daughter get physically ill looking at Bush or listening to his illiterate voice. I know of others who are like that, too - yet women like Townsend or Harriet Miers live to worship him - and you can throw Condi into that mix, too. I don't get it, but the look in their eyes is frightening and reminiscent of the brainwashing of another era (or of certain FReepers today).
