Poll question: Are you in favor of tasing Code Pinkers?
Edited on Tue Nov-20-07 08:26 AM by proud2Blib
A FOX reporter thinks Code Pinkers should be tasered. Do you agree?

The person you are asking the question of decides the answer, not the questioner.

I've seen a lot of threads degenerate into flame wars wherein people accuse each other of being trolls, Republicans, etc. I've always dismissed this, chalking it up to the usual disunity of our "big tent party."

But over a quarter think Code Pink protesters should be tasered? There are a hell of a lot more asshats lurking here than I had ever imagined.

Depends on the alternative
Tasers were introduced after all as a non-lethal alternative to firearms use. However they have been misused at times - as any tool can be - would you prefer that alternative was not there at all?

18. Non-lethal? Look around DU, or google 'taser deaths' and you'll
see how non-lethal tasers really are. And we're talking about anti-war activists, not criminals. Unless you see no difference in the two and if that's the case, I have no further words for you because I don't agree.

35. nightsticks can be lethal too
However most often they are used non lethally. So are tasers. Heck just restraining people can be lethal, but is far more often not. You cannot restrict law enforcement options because of rare occurrences. Tasering is one option in the escalation of options, and a taser is a tool, just like handcuffs or a baton. If a cop faced with non-threatening noncompliance goes straight for a taser he or she is an idiot and/or poorly trained. That's sad, but the taser is still not to blame - and is better than the same cop going for a gun - surely you can agree with that? Faced with resistance or assault however, the taser is an excellent tool that NORMALLY and used as intended does not cause lasting harm, yet means the arrestee is quickly and effectively rendered no longer a threat.

A serious question - how SHOULD police deal with those who are illegally occupying private property and who refuse to disperse or comply with lawful orders to leave? What about if they resist arrest or chain themselves to fixtures etc? What about if they physically threaten or assault your officers? Let's imagine this is a KKK rally we're talking about so you have no sympathy for their politics. How would you deal with it as a police lieutenant in charge of the response?

48. All those scenarios have happened to and by anti-war activists
and have been resolved without tasering. We used to have rights, such as the right to dissent, in this country which are being slowly eroded as it is, and now you want to allow corporal punishment?
I unequivocally do not!

119. tasers are considered less damaging but more effective than nightsticks.
The fact is the taser charge is measured, and the nightstick is in the hands of a person. You can never make any one person use the stick the same each time, let alone get more than one person to use the stick in similar fashion.

That's the alternative I'm talking about. Freedom of speech is great sure - but freedom of speech is not freedom of occupying private property or impeding lawful business when speaking. Again - do you want cops to ONLY have guns?

31. bs you're the best
but I will differ with you on this.

It has to do with seeing a drunk man at a traffic stop shot dead, through the heart, as he approached a cop -- and knowing he would be alive had he been tasered. IMO that kind of thing happens far more often than is picked up by the media, and that taser deaths statistically are blown out of proportion.

What I do find troubling is tasing for convenience. When someone isn't moving fast enough for a cop's preference, or they just happen to be pissing them off. Or the cop doesn't agree with their political point of view.

44. 'Might' still be alive. There are too many cases where tasers
kill people. Why is everything that ever happens solved with violence or death? Why is a taser or a gun the only option? In your scenario, why is a cop attacking a drunk man to begin with? Couldn't he have been handcuffed and hauled off instead?
And tasers are immediate punishment for something that may or may not be deserved. How about the case of the person who was in a diabetic coma who got tased anyway? I never did figure that one out.

And do you think CodePinkers deserve to be tased, or that it's preferable to blowing them away with a gun, for being anti-war? Neither is acceptable imo.

Violence has become the answer to everything instead of using common sense.

46. I forgot to mention -- the drunk was also swinging a saber
so the cop was justified. Very disturbing to see.

I agree 100% that they are abused. But the problem could be all but solved by putting the same requirement on their use as handguns -- only when the cop's life is in jeopardy. A couple of $million-plus lawsuits buys a whole lot of common sense.

49. I'm with you on the lawsuits! And I'd be a bit more
elastic if the cop's life was actually in jeopardy, but in far too many cases, that isn't the case at all. I think cops get a new 'toy' and want to 'play' with it.

for the sake of journalism world wide....the faux reporters should experience this, esp the CEO's and talking heads. Then perhaps they would think twice about even suggesting this. Journalist are so removed from the experiences of the average guy, that they haven't a clue. They have forgotten from whence they came. Perhaps if they remembered-they might actually have some compassion and common sense.

Darn, now I have Don Henley's song Dirty Laundry stuck in my head.

38. Non sequitur and a red herring to boot.
Supporting the use of a non-lethal alternative to firearms when necessary does not include supporting their use on people who are speaking their mind and doing nothing illegal. However again free speech is not freedom to occupy private property and impede lawful business. If 20 people walk into your living room and refuse to leave do you want cops to be restricted to a) asking them nicely and b) shooting them with nothing in between? Tasers are simply options to use in between a and b. No more, no less. Their misuse, or overuse, does not change this.

40. I actually read the article in the OP. My answer is no.
Whereas the host seems to simply wish any "Code Pinker" tased for no reason, of course not. Anyone voting yes on those grounds stands not only in defiance of the Constitution but is also voting for a police state.

Shameful.

Agreed.

Are you aware of the forced vaccination on children? They had attack dogs that stood guard and guns fully loaded as the children were hauled off to the courthouse.

I am pro-vaccination since I am old enough to remember polio. Wouldn't wish that horrific disease on anyone. I also have a sister who was nearly blinded by measles. Parents who don't vaccinate their kids are guilty of child abuse, IMO.

58. Most definately NO!
This issue hardly deserves even being joked about. The use of tasing in general should be intensely questioned.

The people of codepink are on the frontline of the battle for freedom. I find it difficult to swallow that there are people on this board who think they should be tasered. If codepink, with their effective use of in-your-face obnoxiousness, are allowed to be harmed and silenced then we will enter more deeply into a police state. I would not advise supporting this kind of talk by FOX. In fact we should be speaking out against such dangerous kind of talk by the media mouth-pieces. One might argue that if they were tasered their cause would become more visible, but you can bet the spin would not be a supporting message in favor of codepink and the causes they support.

98. Yes I agree with you. I find myself joking about issues that are
serious quite often. It's healthy to be able to laugh in the face of fear and absurdity. But I saw something that compelled me to be serious here. I see things posted at DU like the work of Naomi Wolfe showing us how we are traveling down a road very similar to that of Germany in the 1930's. We must be very diligent and take careful consideration of how we react to such a serious issue. We have to make sure we stand on the side of those who put themselves on the line for freedom for all of us. Some say they are crazy and obnoxious women, but who else speaking out for freedom gets media attention? If we laugh off this question, or worse, support such action, we are supporting the proposal put out there in the airwaves that it is okay to perform such violence against our threadbare right of freedom of speech. If these ladies are unable to protest loudly against the carnage being carried out in our name then we have lost a crucial voice in this war against our Constitution that we are in the midst of.

Edited on Tue Nov-20-07 12:21 PM by Mr_Jefferson_24
... 32 of 108 respondents answering "yes" -- WTF. These are nonviolent anti-war activists -- and tasing IS sometimes deadly.

Are Code Pinkers known to be on the 'wrong' side of the immigration issue? Is the crowd that likes the idea of imprisoning undocumented visitors from south of the border weighing in with the "yes" votes?

How are we to understand these results? Sad.

Especially since I had just seen the poll whether smoking should be completely banned.

I mean, what sincere DUer honestly thinks that protesters should be tazed?

3. Code Pink is irritating and unhelpful, and it's especially funny to see a flamebait support of them backfire.

28% think it is okay to TASER someone for civil disobedience????

This isn't mace or capstun which can be washed out, this is a freaking jolt of electricity which can potentially kill someone.

A taser should only be used in situations where a GUN would otherwise be used, so essentially 28% of the people on this board think it is just okay to shoot someone for acts of civil disobedience.
