On This Date 11/20-"disastrous decisions"

2005: Today on CNN Larry Wilkerson expands on comments made in October. Wilkerson, a 31-year military vet, served as chief of staff to Bush Secretary of State Colin Powell. He's called the elder George Bush "one of the finest presidents we've ever had", and today tells CNN that he voted for the younger President Bush, twice.

Yet Wilkerson believes that all is not well. His time spent as the #2 man in the State Dept. convinced him of a "Cheney-Rumsfeld cabal" that "produced a series of disastrous decisions". In contrast to the Bush administration, Wilkerson says good governance requires "a willingness to listen to dissenting opinions. It requires leaders who can analyze, synthesize, ponder and decide. Given the choice, I'd choose a frustrating bureaucracy over an efficient cabal every time".

Wilkerson worries that, if there is a pandemic or nuclear explosion in a major city, "you are going to see the ineptitude of this government". Because of administration policy, Wilkerson said, "You and I and every other citizen like us is paying the consequences whether it was a response to Katrina that was less than adequate certainly, or the situation in Iraq". Of the nation's current situation, Wilkerson wrote in the LA Times: "It's a disaster".
