Just got an email from a Republican friend...... |

that Chavez is doing business with the Iranians and manufacturing AK-47's so that they can attack the US.
I think that this assertion is ludicrous. What do you guys think?

25. As for my Republican friends..... |
|
I like to talk to Republicans. Yes, they infuriate me, at times. Most of the time, in fact.
But, if I just discussed politics with Democrats, I wouldn't be doing anything to change the world that we are living in, would I? I think it is important to talk to our fellow Americans, no matter what their political persuasion, but it it MOST important to talk to Republicans.
Neocons are another story....

37. Talking is one thing, being friends is another. |
|
I can't do either with republicans any more. Unless we can stick to a safe non-political topic, which is almost nothing now, I start hating them for their part in our current situation, which is near unforgivable. And real friendship is completely out of the question - I don't consider people who don't share my core beliefs friends, and my core beliefs would prevent any association with the republican party at this point.

Naturally, the fact that he met with anyone who is enemy to the Bush Administration is bound to get the wheels rolling in the Bush Administration. The Bush Admninistration doesn't care a rat's @$$ what happens to Americans.

Maybe you were joking, but I think it is important to say that we should ALL be doing this. Talking to Republicans, that is. It is every bit as important as marching in protest.
Except for a few diehard neocons, many people who voted Republican in the past did so because they have ALWAYS done so. There are many Republicans out there who are beginning to see the light. I think it's high time the American people come together and start talking about what is really important to us, instead of buying into the fear and the hatred that is being spooned out to us by the mainstream media.
It's called being part of the solution.

32. Who said I trust them? |
|
And what difference does it make? I am simply talking to them. It's called political discourse. We should all engage in it more. Maybe we wouldn't be in this shape, if we had done more of it in the first place.
Surely, this process is familiar to you: Someone has a list of email addresses; belonging to friends, acquaintances, etc. They send out an email supporting their political views. Someone answers it. And, while most of the people in the group don't take their time to answer, they read the back and forth exchanges, and make up their minds, or change them, based on the information and arguements made in those exchanges.
This is an important process. It is why I came to DU with the information, in the first place. I did not come here to be told that I shouldn't talk to Republicans, who are, after all, my fellow Americans. I came here to get information.

You are right to talk to people. There are too many divisions in this country already, and as we can see from other nations -- both today and throughout history -- nothing good comes from promoting intolerance and hatred. Not only that, but a closed mind, like a closed room, is always stuffy.
