http://www.suntimes.com/news/world/663932,CST-NWS-cath23.article

November 23, 2007

BURLINGTON, Ontario -- A Roman Catholic school board ordered the popular fantasy book The Golden Compass taken off library shelves at dozens of schools Thursday.

Similar concerns prompted a Catholic organization in the U.S. to urge parents to boycott a movie version of the book starring Nicole Kidman.

All the stupid brouhaha means more readers for the best children's book series in decades- perhaps ever. Books with complex language, real character development and complexity of ideas.

If I could just get them to realize how anti-religion MY books are so they'd raise a fuss, I'd be sitting pretty.

9. Funny
They never bothered the book until the movie was made of it.

I saw a commercial for the movie yesterday and thought, "Ruh-roh! Witches and powers -- someone's panties will be getting in a twist."

11. It's their perogative
As long as it isn't removed from public library's, public schools or banned from being sold I would care less what a Catholic school or organization does.

15. So in order to quell the comparison between Magisterium and the Church
Edited on Fri Nov-23-07 09:49 AM by Zodiak Ironfist
The Church acts exactly like the Magisterium?

(The Magisterium is the Church in the book, and they are evil.....the whole series is about the Magisterium trying to prevent people from knowing their own true spiritual nature....and prnciple Magisterium representative in the book is Mrs. Coulter)

again and again the Catholic Church portrays their God as the ultimate cosmic wimp, with his followers in a tizzy over the smallest besmirching of his name.

leave the really good anti-religious parts out?
Is it a theme through out the series or is it more blunt in one or the other parts?

Just imagine what would happen of FFRF or American Atheist did the same thing to Passion of the Xrist..We would be called everything imaginable from 'Bigots' to 'Anti-Semitic'

24. There's a part in the third book where one character says...
"The Christian religion is just a comforting illusion" or something similar. I'd like to see them say that in the movie.

25. Thats all?? Nothing more??
Is that what all the noise is about? I thought there was something more to this racket the fundies are clammering about.

I just bought the entire set of hardcover books, I do hope it is worth it.

28. No, there's way more than that.
The Catholic Church is basically portrayed as the Evil Empire, committing all kinds of atrocities. It's not the "real" Catholic Church, though, since a good portion of the stories takes place in a parallel universe that's like this one, with many of the same nations and institutions, but different. The stories generally paint organized religion as the root of all backwardness and wrongness. The Christian religion quote is just the most blatant slap in the face. I of course got a big kick out of all this, and an even bigger kick out of knowing how it pisses off the fundies -- although many of them ironically share Pullman's attitude toward Catholics.

I will most defenantly read the series now.

Not just the Catholic Church, but all religion is indeed an evil empire and the root to the worlds backwardness and wrongness.

26. Anyone else who was raised RC of a certain age
Does it also seem to you that the church is becoming increasingly intolerant and reactionary?

This sort of stuff didn't happen in the schools I attended, and certainly not in my home. In fact, while I expect to read this about some of the more nutty fundamentalist denominations, I'm continually surprised these days to read these things happening with Catholics.
