I might be taking a trip to GTMO |
|
I am up for "Individual Augmentation" (Navy code for going overseas to do the Army's job) It looks like duty at GTMO. I am not pleased...

5. My friend in Navy Reserves is headed to Iraq... |
|
also to do MP type duty in one of the jails... His father is fit to be tied, having lost one son already, almost losing another during Columbine, and now this son, who has been off active duty for six years, being sent to backfill for the army. I don't believe he ever had infantry training or anything else that would be useful in Iraq.
Damn this administration...

So, it is really the Pentagon that wants all of us to "augment" our 'very special' features to be even 'more special' (for a mere $99.99)...LOL

|
:P
Seriously, maybe you can make a difference for those that are there and being held unlawfully.
I'm sorry that you might have to go.
At least it's only 20 miles from the USA, if that's any consolation.
Are you a good swimmer? :P
Is there anyway you can get out of it?

18. Really? I'd love to go to old Havana |
|
All the old 1950s era cars that have been kept up, great food and some really warm, friendly people. Not at all the grim pic we have of the former Eastern Europe and Soviet Union-style communism. No, I'm not defending communism or Castro, but I would love to visit Cuba.

I was there in 1960 and 61 on board the USS Norfolk. Back then it was a great place, and it has a great beach. 25 cent mixed drinks and a great acey- duecy. I don't guess it's as much fun now, then it Castro had just taken over and the cubans at the fence were still trading. Good luck and watch yourself from an old shellback.

23. Treat them with compassion |
|
Remember they are mostly not criminals, just people like you and me.
I imagine that's an easy thing to know when you arrive, and harder to remember once you're in the role of prison guard, if that's what you'll be doing. You've read the hold onto your humanity letter, right?

28. Get a picture with the Iquanas! |
|
There are some incredible lizards on Gitmo - maybe on all of Cuba (I didn't look on the other side of the fence). :) IIRC, they are iquanas, and the species is unique to Cuba. They grow to about 5-6 feet long, and they were all over the hills on the way to the beach.
We were there for training so I didn't have much time on the island, but we did have a ship's picnic at one of the beaches, and we did raid the exhange pretty good. I enjoyed my time there. A lot of guys stationed there take up scuba diving - the water's great for it.

Even if you can't speak about your experiences now, it will be important to have this information for the history books.

And if you do get the opportunity to visit Havana, please try to do so. It's wonderful. Also try Varadero, a very fun resort for some much-deserved R&R.
Peace. :hippie:
