Are we safer?

A report card on the war on terror.

We have more than six years of experience with the Bush administration's war on terror, and there has not been another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. But can the administration take credit for that? Below is a link to a report card on what the administration's counter-terrorism strategy has achieved, and what it has cost. The figures are drawn from official government sources, reliable news accounts, institutional reports and our own continuing review of data.



WorldWide:

# of Terrorist attacks 2001 = 1,732

# of Terrorist attacks 2006 = 6,659

At Home:

Number of "terrorism or terrorism-related" convictions and guilty pleas (with an internation connection) cliamed by the Justice Department as of June 2006 = 261

Number of those cases actually involving attempted terrorism = 2

Minimum number of foreign nationals
preventively detained in anti-terrorism
initiatives in the U.S. in the first two years
after 9/11 = 5,191

Number of those convicted of terrorist
crimes today = 0

3. More people than ever hate our government/country for its lawless aggression.

So, I'd say we are not safer.

However, I am far less fearful of an imminent terrorist act than I am of an imminent attack upon democracy in our own nation. Moreover, for the first time in my life, I am horribly ashamed of being an "american". I am associated with "a people" that has failed to either take a stand or fight for their OWN democratic rights and liberties let alone take a stand AGAINST egregiously barbaric and illegal behavior by its own government.

If I were able to get out of this country, I would do so, immediately.

The only way we can become "safer" is to remove this president and all his constituents from power.

I believe more than removal will be required to get us back on track. Prosecutions will be necessary to deter future abuses of power and to get ALL intelligence/dod agents in line, for the sake of our democratic institution.
