(a motorist was tased because he was too slow in getting hic documents and for objecting to the officer's tone)
This is what "law" enforcement will look like. This is what a typical interaction will look like when private security companies become increasingly prevalent domestically. I read in the thread where this video is posted that these cops in this area of Texas are engaged in criminal activities. I don't doubt it. Goons like this one are actually protecting those private interests. I think one of the most dangerous trends is allowing police to work off-duty for private enterprise. What happens when the private interests conflict with his lawful responsibility?

1. Unfuckingreal!
That a-hole cop needs jail time. That was completely unwarranted.

4. Looks like the '60s - early '70s are back with upgraded technology...
... but just the bad stuff's back -- buzzcut bulls with clubs and dogs; the Vietnam War and the draft ripping the country apart; the running, occasionally violent battles between the long-hairs and the rednecks; the beatings and jailings and drug busts and pounding on the door at four in the morning; full-scale Nixon/Mitchell/FBI/CIA repression; enemies lists; wiretapping and infiltrating the anti-war movement; provocateurs stirring up shit... All that garbage is back with a vengeance.

But at least that stuff was offset somewhat by the joy and excitement and drugs and music and radical politics and Che and Marcuse and MLK and peace marches -- and everybody wrapped up in the idea of actually changing this country and the world for the better... But that nonsense is all soooooo 20th Century.

No need for slack anymore; the Constitution's dying, the people are sedated, the enemy is everywhere, the peasants have no more money or power, the elites stole it all, the entire federal government serves only itself and its corporate employers, and the middle class is either "downscaling" or scared shitless about holding on to their rapidly deflating dollars.

Nobody but a few marginalized weirdos has the time or the attention span to look around and grasp the situation as it is, not as they'd like it to be.

Pop culture, through its mass media megaphone, calls these people doomsayers, unpatriotic terrorist sympathizers, radical socialists, conspiracy theorists, America haters, fifth columnists and, increasingly these days, Kucinich supporters. The rest of the country is, I suppose, divided into groups like Good GOPermans, fatalists and nihilists, Pollyannas, the working poor, the homeless and hopeless, disappearing trade unionists, the executive class, drug and alcohol abusers and the DLC dems.

Can I emigrate now? Have I paid enough dues yet? Do I get to live out my life peacefully in a place that hasn't gone stark raving mad? Doesn't seem all that much to ask.

I've put in my time as an American activist and I've got the scars to prove it. I'd prefer to turn the job over to somebody younger, with a bit more energy and a bit more optimism.

6. I gotta agree with you.. with everything going on
and my lack of health care or insurance, there's not much left here is there... So much potential wasted because of a greedy few assholes and an apathetic populace..

9. Costa Rica is lovely this time of year...
And they haven't had a standing army in generations, have universal health care, enjoy a stable democratic-republic, and there's even a 1/2 scale copy of the Paris opera house in downtown San Jose... Rose marble, ornate guilded columns, balconies overlooking the stage, sweeping staircases. Pretty amazing place.

Anyway, if the screws tighten just a little bit more -- and it seems HR 1955/S 1959 is just the ticket to begin domestic roundups -- Central America is going to look pretty inviting.

Amazing, isn't it? To escape encroaching fascism, you now need to leave the alleged land of the free and go to a country dead in the middle of an area that so recently symbolized right-wing repression, death squads, the "disappeared," military juntas, government by strutting generals and all the rest of that CIA-approved corporatist model.

Constitution? We don't got to show you no stinkin' Constitution. Hands on top of the car...

7. Costa Rica? Anyone else down for that?
My conscience and belief in human kindness are beaten down every day while subsisting in this country run by evil a-holes.

19. I've put in my time, too, Warren, and I am ready to bail. Frankly, I can
hardly wait to retire and move elsewhere. (About 5 years.) I know the feeling, and the responses of the so-called 'citizens' around me to the way things are has made me realize that they're a part of the problem. I'm simply tired of talking about it, and tired of being the Cassandra that no one listens to.

13. And We Need To Emulate This group !!!

Berkeley Copwatch is the original Copwatch group. We began in 1990 on Telegraph Ave. as an all-volunteer organization dedicated to monitoring police actions and non-violently asserting our rights. Since that time, many Copwatch-type organizations have sprung up across the nation, in various forms. You are welcome to copy any of the materials on our website and use them to help educate the public and to start a Copwatch group in your community. Although you may find web pages or organizations that call themselves "Copwatch", read through their material carefully. Berkeley Copwatch is based on the idea that WATCHING the police is a crucial first step in the process of organizing. We do not attempt to interfere in police activity or to resist police misconduct physically. It is our hope that, one day, mass outrage at police and government violence will increase to a point where fundamental change in the nature of policing becomes inevitable.

Berkeley Copwatch's Goals Our main goal is to reduce police violence by directly observing the police on the street, documenting incidents and keeping police accountable. We maintain principles of non-violence while asserting the rights of the detained person. We provide support to victims whenever possible. We also seek to educate the public about their rights, police conduct in the community and issues related to the role of police in our society. Our other goal is to empower and unite the community to resist police abuse. We will do this by sharing information with the community, conducting "Know Your Rights" trainings, sponsoring rallies, supporting victims and other community based efforts to deal with the problem. We also encourage people to solve problems WITHOUT police intervention. We want to explore alternatives to calling the police. Most importantly, we encourage people to exercise their right to observe the police and to advocate for one another.
