Dear NY Progressive Democrats:
The Presidential and Congressional primary for NY State will take place on February 5, 2008. There are serious concerns that uncertified electronic voting machines, which are highly vulnerable to hacking, will be forced upon NY voters, creating disruptions, delays and doubts about the validity of the vote count.
The Department of Justice, under newly appointed Attorney General Mukasey, has launched a lawsuit against the NY State Board of Elections, demanding that New York State introduce uncertified touch-screen voting machines (also known as "DRE's") into all of its voting precincts in 2008. Voting-integrity activists are alarmed, outraged and are organizing to stop this.
The basis of the lawsuit is that NY State must introduce DREs in order to make its voting system accessible to the disabled, as required under the Help America Vote Act (HAVA). However, there exist OTHER, more reliable technologies that can enable the disabled to vote on paper ballots with the assistance of a ballot marker machine. The paper ballot system being presented by a broad coalition of New York voting-integrity activists as the most viable alternative to DRE's is the Paper Ballot Optical Scanning system (also known as PBOS).
What you can do!
The decision on whether to buy Electronic voting machines ("DREs") or the cheaper and more reliable paper ballot/optical scanner system (PBOS) currently rests with the two Election Commissioners in each county. They are political appointees who are not elected by the people. They have been heavily lobbied by the vendors and unfortunately, many of them want to buy DREs. The vendors have spent millions of dollars to influence the election commissioners, including sending them on an expense-paid trip to Nevada "to see how well DRE's work."
Our best hope is with the Governor and the county legislatures. They must act to ensure that the people of New York do not have to pay for and vote on a failed technology.

#2: Contact your county legislature to pass resolutions opposing DRE's and in support of PBOS systems:
The Madison County legislature recently passed a resolution calling for PBOS (paper ballots with scanners). Similar resolutions have been passed in the New York City Council, and Tompkins, Albany, Otsego, Ulster, Schoharie, and Putnam county legislatures.
For copies of resolutions online and info on how to get a resolution passed in your county go to:
http://nyvv.org/resolutions.shtmlThe Westchester County Board of Legislators especially needs to be pressured to pass a resolution in support of PBOS. If you live in Westchester County, go to this site:
http://www.westchesterlegislators.com and click on the map to find your legislator and access a form to send them an email.
If you live in another county, please contact your county legislators for a resolution to support PBOS. Unfortunately, there is no one-stop website for all the NY State County legislators, but if you are good at digging you can start by finding the website for your county at this site:

Come to the January, 2008 New York City PDA Meet-UP
Topic: Election Protection 2008
Date: January 14, 2008
Time: 7:00pm
Location: Stone Creek Bar 27th Street between Lexington & 3rd
At this meet-up we'll screen two short videos: "Uncounted: The Hidden Math of American Elections" which presents up-to-date information about the chaos of disenfranchisement that touch-screen voting machines created in the 2004 and 2006 elections; and "Bought and Sold: Electronic Voting in New York" which exposes the lies and misrepresentations of electronic voting machine vendors as they try to sell their products to the NY State Elections Commissioners.
We'll also get an update from election protection activists on the DOJ lawsuit and what you can do to help.
One of the best ways to protect against voter disenfranchisement is to make sure that the poll workers working on election day are educated and well-trained. We'll provide information on how you can get involved in being a poll worker for New York City for the primary on February 5th.
