Question about taser-style weaponry |
|
If there existed a similar device that could temporarily incapacitate a target without causing physical pain, would you support it or reject it?
An obvious example from fiction is the "phaser" from Star Trek. Other science fiction precedents include "paralysis rays" and/or devices that incapacitate by hyperstimulating the brain's pleasure centers.
I have to disclaim that I would still oppose such non-lethal weapons because I'm just about certain that they'd be used as a precursor to abuse, e.g. paralyze the subject and then beat him or shock him or whatever.

Because this has actually happened: "have to disclaim that I would still oppose such non-lethal weapons because I'm just about certain that they'd be used as a precursor to abuse, e.g. paralyze the subject and then beat him or shock him or whatever."

2. It would still be preferable to 50 thousand+ volts of torture |
|
The abuse factor is going to have to be dealt with in either case, but this should be a no brainer.

3. Sure, but then again, I think tasers are ok too (but they need better usage enforcement) |

Next thing you know there'll be phaser parties, phaser rapes, etc. The point of a Taser is that it's painful enough that you won't want to be hit by it a second time.
Pain is a great motivator. Just ask a wasp.
(sorry aikoaiko, I was responding to the main post. I'm in agreement with you.)

5. You Can Buy Tasers As a Consumer |

And they are very affordable.
What kind of usage enforcement would you expect?
I'm thinking I might buy one, so much easier to use than a baseball bat.
