Can someone please explain to me: If I am pre-approved for a
credit card, why do the companies offering these cards always provide you a form to fill out giving your life history? If they need all the information they request, what am I pre-approved for?
Opening the envelope? Putting the whole thing in the shredder?

If I want any of these cards, If I am pre-approved, why can't I check a "yes" box, sign and mail.

BTW: the offer that came today says I can apply on line at www.newcardonline.com and use the code located at the bottom of the form. Hmmmm, sounds secure, doesn't it?

1. I haven't opened a soliciting letter or email from a credit card company in a decade.
They are in the business of taking your money while providing you only a marginal service.

12. I heard about people who would tape the envelope to a brick
because the postage was to be paid by the corp getting it in the mail ...

14. I hope you're shredding them
I open them only to feed them into my shredder. One of the local news stations did a segment where they ripped the credit application into a few pieces, taped it back together, changed the preprinted address and added a cell phone number to it - but kept the original sender's name and other information on it. Most the time, they got a card back.

2. Better yet ...
Because I have bad health, I haven't worked much and have very little credit. Even so, companies (particularly Citibank) are ever so eager to "pre-approve" me for any Mega Ultra Platinum Jesus Card I'll take.

5. I think that you will be approved for a card, but the terms will vary depending
on your income, credit history, etc. They might give a very low credit limit with very high interest rates and fees if they don't like your numbers. You can probably do much better though by going to your local bank or credit union.

8. Read the fine print. You are pre-approved to apply for the card
Not to actually receive one.

9. Read the fine print
As has been pointed out, "pre-approved" has no real meaning.

10. you were only pre-approved to be offered a card.
not to actually get one.

Like those used car places that promise to accept all credit applications. That doesn't mean they'll approve you.

11. you can opt out of all junk mail "preapproved" cc offers & insurance ads
at the Consumer Credit Reporting website
https://www.optoutprescreen.com/?rf=t

or by calling 1-888-5-OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688)

you can also get off of all junk-mail lists used by members of the Direct Marketing Association at this website: https://www.dmachoice.org/MPS/ (costs $1)

I opted out of preapproved credit offers and my junk mail declined considerably.
