More teachers getting national certifications
More teachers getting national certifications

More than 400 Oklahoma teachers became National Board Certified this year, a national standards board announced Tuesday.

National Board Certification sets apart teachers with higher credentials and rewards them for their efforts. To become certified, teachers spend one to three years going through a rigorous assessment, including video recordings of their classroom instruction.

Oklahoma now ranks ninth in teachers who have become certified, with 1,995 teachers, or nearly 5 percent of the educating force statewide.

1. Why not? It's often a boost in pay.
That, and it can lead to administration-level faster or help get a book published or whatever. It's a good program, actually, and really makes you think about how you teach and how you can teach better.

Recruiting of foreign teachers questioned

For the past two years, school district officials here have traveled to the Philippines to recruit teachers to fill teaching vacancies. That may be at an end after school board members this week refused to approve a third trip, saying they wanted more information and will revisit the issue next month.Several school districts in Kansas, including Wichita, have relied on overseas educators as it becomes increasingly difficult to find certified Kansas teachers. But the school board members, many of them new to the board, said they weren't yet comfortable with the policy.

3. Oh my, yes. Much better.
I've known a few who've done the national certification program, and they were really glad they did it.
