5. Radio New Zealand reported last night
That there is a deadline on the 21st of February for Iran to meet with some inspectors.

They interviewed a US general and he seemed to think, that this will be thew tipping point for Bush*t.

4. My husband had the TV on CNN yesterday as background
noise while he was playing on the computer and, I swear, every time I walked upstairs to speak with him or do something, CNN was running a story - complete with eye-witnesses - about Britney Spears shaving her head.

As a former news reporter who HATED doing "fluff" pieces (and so did most of the reporters I knew), I had to cringe.

How the fuck is that news? Maybe a "human interest" blurb, but to have it on the continuous loop? Oh, brother! No wonder Americans are so dumb!

http://www.inthenews.co.uk/news/news/energy/iran-reaffirms-unshaken-nuclear-determination-$1051151.htm

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has reaffirmed his country's right to develop nuclear technology without foreign interference.

In a major speech on the 28th anniversary of Iran's Islamic revolution, Mr Ahmadinejad accused western nations of hypocrisy in calling for negotiation while simultaneously delivering uncompromising demands.

"If we suspend our activities then what are we going to talk about? Why if your nuclear plants are working 24 hours a day why must Iran be pressured to shut them down?" the AFP news agency quoted Mr Ahmadinejad as saying.

"We are ready to negotiate but under fair and even conditions."

A previous deadline last summer to open up the Iranian nuclear programme to inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was rebuffed, leading to the imposition of sanctions in December.

The United Nations has now called on Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment programme by a February 21st deadline.

The international community believes that Iran may use its atomic technology to develop a nuclear arsenal, despite consistent reaffirmations from Iranian leaders that civil energy use is its only goal.

Iranian officials have said that they want to develop approximately 3,000 centrifuges at the Natanz nuclear facility.

Meanwhile the controversial future of Iran's energy development is on the table for discussion at this weekend's security conference of defence ministers in Munch.

German chancellor Angela Merkel's comments yesterday that there is "no way around" Iran accepting the need for transparency are expected to be rebuffed by Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani, who will address the conference later today.

12. Deadline looms
http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/breaking/2007/0218/breaking10.htm

ran defiant as nuclear deadline looms

Iran will not agree to suspend uranium enrichment as demanded by the UN Security Council, the Foreign Ministry said today.

"Suspension is unacceptable. There is no ground to do that. This issue belongs to the past. There is no legal and logical justification for that," spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini told a weekly news conference.

The UN has given Tehran until February 21st to halt its nuclear programme which some countries believe is an attempt to develop nuclear weapons.

Iran insists its work is a legitimate programme to develop nuclear energy.

"We are creating with spirit that the military make an announcement to this cabinet that they cannot win and a surge will be pointless. We are creating with spirit that an inspired thought get through the pRes's seemingly blockheaded arrogance. We are creating with spirit that the suffering being perpetrated on this sphere cease and greater enlightenment come to be, globally. We are creating with spirit that more become far more aware than any media details allow. We are creating with spirit that awareness overcome disregard for the health and happiness of all human beings. We are creating with spirit a lasting peace on Earth."

"Rinse and Repeat"

Perhaps in this still new millennium. . .wars are very simply, no longer winnable.

Peace is all

Is that what "creating with spirit" means? Praying?

Well, good then. Only let's try to do more than pray! Forgive my ignorance. I'm unfamiliar with the expression.

13. I found this on the BBC's site:
Q&A: Iran and the nuclear issue

The United Nations Security Council has voted to impose sanctions on Iran following its refusal to suspend its uranium enrichment programme.

After months of negotiations, the 15 members unanimously passed a resolution which will limit trade in material and technology that Iran could use to create and deliver a nuclear weapon.

What does the resolution say?

Resolution 1737 was passed under Article 41 of the UN Charter which allows for economic sanctions but not the use of military force.

It mandates all UN member states "to prevent the supply, sale or transfer... of all items, materials, equipment, goods and technology which could contribute to Iran's enrichment-related, reprocessing or heavy water-related activities or to the development of nuclear weapon delivery systems".

The resolution also directs states to freeze the funds and assets of a list of key individuals and companies linked to Iran's nuclear or missile programmes.

Sanctions can be lifted if Iran meets all the directives of the Security Council and the UN's nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), but the text warns that further economic measures will be considered if Iran does not comply.

Such measures would be considered in the light of an IAEA report on Iranian compliance due within 60 days of the resolution (i.e. by 21 February 2007)

14. The Deadline
http://djysrv.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html

All this pressure may be having an effect. On Saturday Feb 10th Iran dispatched one of its top diplomats to a meeting with officials from the European union. What's pushing things along is a February 21st deadline by the United Nations which requires Iran to stop enriching nuclear fuel or face further financial sanctions. The Iranian government defied a United Nations Security Council deadline of August 31, 2006, to halt its uranium enrichment activities. The Security Council voted on December 23, 2006, to impose sanctions on the country and gave Iran a two-month deadline for its nuclear work to be frozen.

The February 21, 2007, deadline is creating new tensions between the US and European countries. Watch for news on the Munich Security Conference which is where the the other shoe may drop in less than two weeks. The dance has begun and everyone knows there aren't enough chairs to go around when the music stops on February 21st. Iran must stop its uranium enrichment or it may pay an economic price that it cannot afford. If Iran can drive a wedge between members of the UN Security Council, it may continue to pump oil and pursue its nuclear dreams for a while longer.

Many people would shave their head, if it would only bring the troops home.

How come bu$h doesn't support the troops? He keeps them in harms way and continues to send more.

Edited on Sun Feb-18-07 06:40 PM by EOO
It's very :puke: inducing. Did we suddenly wake up as a country and think we were in high school again? Do we care that much about the popular kids? I don't. I wasn't consulted on this in any way. Didn't get an e-mail. Didn't get a fax. Didn't get a voice mail.

The fact of the matter is that we're living under a very dangerous regime not seen since the likes of Stalin and Mussolini. They have completely destroyed one country and they're about to do it again. They must be stopped. And yet people are just sitting on their ass shocked that a pop slut would shave her head. God, I fucking hate television.

:argh:
