We've got Air America BACK! |
|
Here in Central Ohio there's a new AA affiliate. WVKO 1580 AM. It comes in loud and clear unlike the previous station which was stepped all over by redneck radio. It's so refreshing to listen to intelligent radio again! Wonder how long it will last before the Clear Channel propaganda machine sucks it up and makes it an "All Sports All Day" station.

1. Good for you! I sure wish ours was back in operation. |
|
For all the carping we may indulge in over AAR's management or talent lineup, it is a terrible blow to lose an affiliate and a progressive voice as we did here in the Atlanta metro area when our AAR station was bought out and their programming phased out (we still had Al Franken for a time--it was kind of odd...)
Enjoy, and make sure to let their advertisers know that you hear about them on AAR if you have occasion to patronize them.

5. I wish we had our AAR back too! |
|
The day we lost our AAR affiliate was the day that I went out and bought an XM radio and subscribed to their service. Now I can still listen to AAR during my morning and evening commutes, with an added bonus of listening to lots of good music on the other stations without all the commercials and, perish the thought, morning talk radio! I would rather ride in my car in silence than listen to Steve and Vicky or The Bert Show! :puke:
But I would prefer to have our affiliate back (it was AM 1690, right?) so that our entire community would be able to listen to it again, not just satellite radio subscribers. It sucks not having those progressive voices on our local airwaves.

14. It was 1690, yes. Funny thing... |
|
As sad as it was to lose AAR, and as outrageous as it is to contemplate that there isn't a single regularly-scheduled progressive talk outlet in the Atlanta area (save for the Democracy Now stuff on 89.3 FM in the afternoon) -- I'll say this much for the people who took it over.
They're independent programmers, and they're at least trying to have a "different" kind of oldies / arts stuff on the air. It would've been really awful if yet another stupid RW talker outlet appeared in its place.
I think that field's played out in the area, anyway. AM 920 advertises all over and still gets crappy ratings. I often wonder what might've been, had the previous owner of AM 1690 been interested in actually PROMOTING the programming... as it happened, he was only interested in being a caretaker-owner, and flipping the property, so to speak.

2. That's excellent news. :-) |

Here's something weird going on here in Denver.
We don't get AAR, but we have 760 Progressive Talk, which is a (gasp) Clear Channel station.
We have a local progressive talk show host first thing in the morning, Jay Marvin, followed by Hartmann, Schultz, Rhodes and Maddow.
They even have ads from Wal Mart...:puke: And, NBC advertises "The Today Show" on there, as well. :eyes:
Strange days indeed. But, on the upside, it's pretty good listening. Unfortunately, Randi's show is on at the same time as Stephanie Miller is replayed on Sirius, making for a tough choice.
But, if there was nothing at all available, I'd be incredibly frustrated, almost jonesing!
Thanks for posting this positive development. :toast: MKJ

Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear this...
What did they replace her show with, and if it's "Young Turks" I may just give up my Sirius.
I listen to first wave and classic vinyl, my husband likes several of the music channels and raw dog, but why on earth would they take off Stephanie Miller from Talk Left???
Are Alex Bennett and Lynne Samuels still cluttering up the airwaves there?

7. As I recall Cleveland wasn't much better when I left it a few years ago |
|
The seriously annoying sports channel "gurus" that I had to listen to in my one carpool were grating. It' not that I don't like a good game, but some of their experts on crap that really doesn't matter were loudmouth boors.

I can sort of pick up an AM station out of Rochester NY that carries AAR but only during early mornings and evenings when the radio waves bounce just right...

17. That's why I find it wierd when people start complaining about the |
|
AAR hosts. I mean, Springer was useless, sure, but would you rather have Limbaugh? Constructive criticism is good, but sometimes people were just picky. Janine is too shrill, Al is too moderate. Eh, at least it's something other than hate radio or the endless analyzation of someone hitting a ball with a stick.
