Electoral vote measure fails to make June ballot |
|
Can it be; can it be? If this report is true, let's break out the bubbly dear Californians (and all good Americans everywhere). Special thanks to Debra Bowen, who continues to fight against the evils of Republicans dirty filthy tricks and keeps us on course. :bounce: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-electoral7dec07,0,5337231.story?coll=la-home-centerHey NeoCons, Bite Us.

2. Er, don't uncork the bubbly just yet |

It could still qualify for the November ballot AND AFFECT THE 2008 ELECTION! http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20071207/news_1n7vote.html

6. I know that's a possibility, but... |

I can't see it passing in a general election. Too many people voting--all that does for the GOP is to divert some money, in that the Democrats would have to devote some resources to educate the public as to why a "yes" vote would be political suicide.
I agree we have to remain vigilant, but the news today is very, very good for us.

One, it speaks volumes about the desperation of the GOP that they'd even try something as blatantly crooked as this.
Two, part of me hopes that the one good thing to come out of this might just be a new discussion about our antiquated method of electing a President. If not a nationwide popular vote (which is what I'd lean toward), actually, the idea behind the initiative was not evil. It just needs to be enacted by several states simultanously, including Republican leaning ones like Texas or Georgia.
(As a Georgian, I would love to have a chance to make my vote for president mean something.)

8. I disagree. The idea behind it was evil, Republican brand vote stealing evil. |

They've wanted California for a long, long time.

11. Any idea coming from the republicans |
|
is evil, and has been evil for years. I despise the way those pricks play politics.
However, that being said, I have no problem with dumping the electoral college or even applying this ballot initiative Nationally. The dirtbags that call themselves republicans would be horrified at the thought of either of those things happening.

15. I agree, I hope we can dump the electoral college. |

I see it as a possibility, way down the road. But for today, a celebration seems to be in order for the small step of stopping an obviously repuke funded determined failed attempt. It just ain't so easy any more to steal elections, is it guys?

12. Ok, ok, calm down. That came out wrong. |
|
Let me try this again--the idea of making all of the states' electors representative of the actual voting public is a good one, although I would prefer a direct, national popular vote. However, that requires a constitutional amendment and I can't see, practically, how we'd ever get enough state legislatures to approve such a thing.
Obviously there's nothing redeeming about the CA initiative being discussed, and I didn't mean to imagine there was.

10. If this ballot measure could be passed Nationally |
|
I'd be all for it. Personally I'd like to see the ass end of the electoral college altogether, it's antiquated and gives unfair representation to certain places over others.

13. Yeah, but it's hard to get all the states on board at the same time. |
|
I've loathed the electoral college since I was first told about how it worked, as a kid. Never, ever thought it was good for our country.
