CIA defiant over destruction of torture tapes

December 8, 2007

.....

It was not clear who authorised the destruction of the tapes, but current and former government officials said the action was approved by the Directorate of Operations, the agency's clandestine service. Two former intelligence officials said that Porter Goss, the head of the agency at the time, was not told about the tapes' destruction and was angry to learn of it later.

.....

Goss: *Well, I NEVER!*

November 15, 2004

"As agency employees we do not identify with, support or champion opposition to the administration or its policies," Mr. Goss said in the memorandum, which was circulated late on Monday. He said in the document that he was seeking "to clarify beyond doubt the rules of the road." .... Goss: *Well, you'd BETTER!*

Goss sure was a helpful short-term tool for * at the CIA, wasn't he??, February 1, 2007

2. Interesting repetition of language about Porter Goss and John Rizzo
It wasn't us. No siree. It was Jose.

NYT, December 8, 2007

The chief of the agency’s clandestine service nevertheless ordered their destruction in November 2005, taking the step without notifying even the C.I.A.’s own top lawyer, John A. Rizzo, who was angry at the decision, the officials said.

From the Brisbane Times, December 8, 2007:

Two former intelligence officials said that Porter Goss, the head of the agency at the time, was not told about the tapes' destruction and was angry to learn of it later.

So, Goss *was angry* and Rizzo *was angry* to learn of the tapes' destruction....

So, who's left holding the bag?

With reference to Scott Horton's piece today

This is spinning so fast, it's dizzying.

4. Porter Johnston Goss profile from Source Watch

Fwiw, Porter Goss, John Negroponte, and William Henry Trotter "Bucky" Bush (poppy's little brother) were members of a secret society at Yale (and no, it wasn't Skull and Bones) called The Fence Club aka Psi Upsilon.
Here's a link to a picture from Yale's 1960 fraternity page of that trio (with interesting commentary by folks like Linda Minor)

those old secret society school ties are very much a part of the BFEE

5. Interesting, bobthedrummer, thanks. Hadn't seen that.
Old Porter is making himself especially scarce these days...

But we know where he's been:

9. Ha! Good ol' Bucky
My husband threatened to beat him up at the State Fair in '88 when he was there promoting his big bro for Prez. Actually challenged him to a fistfight. Thank god we didn't get arrested!

11. I hereby claim ignorance of the sun's rising in the east this morning
I swear under oath, I was in bed asleep, no, wait, I was in a train, and dozed
off, oh, well, whatever, I had no idea that it happened, and I'm appalled to learn
that it happened on my watch without my knowledge, and I had no reason to
suspect it was going on right under my nose, as I am not aware of its ever
having happened before.

16. This man was having breakfast with the head of Pakistan's intelligence services 9-11-2001
a fine job of oversight, Porter, when you were the chair of the Permanent House Intelligence Committee too.

Fwiw-this commentary by Michael Meacher (from July 22, 2004) mentions General Mahmoud Ahmad, the guy Porter was breakfasting with that September 11, 2001 morning, also has unanswered questions that just won't go away.

"The Pakistan connection" (by Michael Meacher 7-22-2004 Guardian)
http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,,1266317,00.html

Then there were his poker games with Dusty et.al.

The nicknames of these criminals and traitors make me puke-Buzzy, Cookie, Bucky, Dusty, Condi, whatever Cofer Black was called...
