Question about Nobel Prize ceremony
Hasn't it always been traditional for them to wear formal attire? I've always seen the men in white tie and tails.

4. Not at the ceremony, but at the banquet that follows.

Dress Code at the Nobel Banquet
What to Wear?

So there you are, finally holding the coveted invitation to the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony and the Nobel Banquet. What to wear? Unless you don't care about what people think, going to a gathering in the wrong clothes can be embarrassing. Wearing the wrong clothes to a formal event like the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony and Nobel Banquet is a nightmare. At the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony in Oslo and Stockholm, guests are required to come in dark suit for gentlemen and short or long dress for ladies. The Nobel Banquet that follows in Stockholm is a strictly formal affair and gentlemen are required to wear white tie and tails, while ladies should be clad in evening gown. This is the perfect time to dress up and look like royalty! Wearing your national costume is an alternative to white tails or evening gown. If you are invited to both gatherings then the strictly formal attire applies.

So strictly speaking, I suppose Al Gore should have been in white tie, but perhaps laureates get more latitude in this.

7. Thanks. I knew I had seen photos of the King hanging a ribbon around the winner's necks
I read "The Prize" by Irving Wallace about thirty years ago. He went into detail about the pageantry and behind-the-scenes events. I recall they had people informing the prize winners about the proper protocol.
