Jeanne Assam: God did it.
Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 08:07 AM by Texas Explorer
I'm so sick of this attribution to some fantastical God. Sorry.

(Jeanne Assam is the security guard who shot to death the shooter at the Colorado church, but according to her "God" pulled the trigger.)

1. Ah. A new twist: guns don't kill people, God does.
Assam's efficient execution of her job under the circumstances was admirable. If her way of accepting the outcome is to put it at God's feet, I guess that's okay.

4. Agreed - If the woman wants to give God credit for helping her stop a massacre
that's her perogrative.

People get too bent out of shape over people giving God credit for their personal achievements.

5. There are at least three threads devoted to this absolutely ASININE topic
Do us all a favor, perform a cursory thread search, and contribute to one of those instead of starting this shit all over again.

10. Yes, God pulled all the triggers.
He pulls all the triggers on all the guns in the universe.

The ones that killed rebels and insurgents and black teenagers and babies and suiciders and jealous lovers and drunken brawlers. God did it.

The thing I've never understood about people (until recently) is how they fail to see those types of statements as blasphemous. In any other era, they would have been stoned for suggesting they were touched in any way by God. That God had an interest in their lives or a plan for their well-being. That blessing was reserved for Holy Men and Royalty.

Jesus began the democratization of the sacred. The Gnostics carried the banner, the Church tightened the reins. But eventually liberalism and democracy won out as it inevitably does.

The law of unintended consequences now has people putting sacred verses from their holy books in places of public filth (toilets)and putting mass produced, retail purchased stickers on vehicles they use for daily, mundane tasks with images of their God.

Very few of these people actually have a concept of the Holy, of the Sacred. Over time it has become the intellectual and emotional equivalent of their favorite sports team. The Pentacostals' mascot is the cross and flame, the Catholics go for the BVM. Woo-hoo! Let's put it on a tee-shirt and sell a few thousand.

And although I have absolutely no fondness for Mormanism I do give them credit for understanding and promoting the concept of a sacred space. And of the American religions, the Quakers also do a good job.

People who consider the sacred, who ponder the ineffable, can only hope that they would be found worthy enough to feel the awful presence of that which Is.

Yet God helped this woman take a life.

Sorry...I got nothin'.

12. She told me she was courageous! So did her side kick!
They told me that today during their interview this morning, so it must be so. :eyes:

She did save people through her actions but this 'patting herself on the back' was obnoxious.

Let her believe that G-d helped her do it well. She stopped a sick man from taking more lives. Good on her, and good on Jesus, or whatever.

The whole point being,
sometimes you need to just
step back and laugh while
looking at the big picture
from a different angle. It
is a good mental exercise.

Besides that, I bet you good
money you can search DU and not
find one example of me being
a troll. I said 'baited' because
I figured you would let it lay
after that. Sadly, I over estimated
you.

16. The answer to that lies in YOUR own faith and is between YOU and YOUR god
It takes a monumentally intolerant and small-minded asshole to ridicule another for professions of their beliefs. You're not one of those kinds of people, are you?

I not once ridiculed the woman's
believe. You do not know that I
have been a Christian for many, many
years. You do not know that as a
Christian, I know the arguments the
non-believers will use. You do not
know that I have studied Christian
theology and history.
You do not know me.
Your ability to make quantum leaps

34. Well....I get the distinct impression God did not pull the trigger....
but if that is what she wants to believe, that is her perogative...all I know is that her being there, and acting when action was necessary is what matters. I see no reason to be offended by her statement...I do believe the "offense" is self imposed. Just as you don't see her POV, no one needs to meet yours.

Personally, I would have tried to severely wound him nor kill him, as I would want to know why he was there.

40. Great lyrics from the Eagles new CD:
And we pray to our Lord
Who we know is American
He reigns from on high
He speaks to us through middlemen
And he shepherds his flock
We sing out and we praise His name
He supports us in war
He presides over football games
And the right will prevail
All our troubles shall be resolved
We have faith in the Lord
Unless there's money or sex involved

From the tune "Frail Grasp on the Big Picture"
